After much research I decided to move ahead with sound deadening the FJ40 this past weekend. I wanted to reduce some of the noise being generated from the - sm420/3spd/283V8.

So here are a few pictures:

More Photos..

Some advice if you do this - wear gloves or you will have many of cuts on your fingers - ask me how I know

Here is one more picture - seats are from the front of trail blazer.

Front done...

Used the SOR carpet kit - PVC molded. I was not blown away with the quality, but it did fit and looks okay.

thoughts about this

Well this project took two days to complete. I needed about 36 square yards of the dynamat to complete the project. Covered the complete floor plan. The cost of the dynamat was $200.00.

I did this b/c the noise in the cruiser was a bit loud and I couldn't talk with the wife and my daughter while driving around town. With the carpet and the dynamat does make a big difference and a conversation is possible and the truck feels more solid and less like a tin can.

I can still hear the truck noises and another big win is that plus there is less engine odors in the truck. All the small holes in the floor have been sealed.

looks good!

costs

Dyanmat $200.00
SOR PVC Mats $ 300.00

Like and would do it again - a little expensive but now people are less reluctant to go for a ride.

Looks good! I am interested in doing something like soon. I look the look of the SOR stuff. What seats do you have in the back??

seats

Those are from a trail blazer and have the integrated seat belts, which I need for the booster seat. I can get the specific year for them if you like.

The year would be great! Thanks Joe, I have a little one coming a long and I need to do everything i can to keep my fj. Thanks!

Would it be possible to put the Dynamat on the underside of the tub? Or would I be asking for rust?

Second skin audio has a product they feel is appropriate for the underside of the tub. It's a liquid based product. Spectrum or Spectrum Sludge.

Sound Deadener/Sound Barriers

No personal experience.

hmm

I run with a bikini 5 mos outta the year.
It has been my experience that things like floor mats and
carpet hold moisture and promote rust.

This seems like a hella rust promoter to me.

would pressure washer, a wire wheel, and metalic brush,
followed by thickly applied Rhino liner on the underside done the same job with less propensity for aiding rust?

Looks nice well done. I particularly like the reduction in fumes..

i'm with ya there. his truck is lined and i think it is a must to put some por-15, rust bullet or even a liner in before trapping all that moisture in there. with that sad, it looks great and i'm glad to hear it actually does some good. i've been wanting to do this to my 40 for a while.

You are gonna freeze your tail off relying on that little rear OE heater in the winter of NY as your only heating source. It oughta produce just enough temperature differential heat to create a blinding fog on the inside of your windows and then it will freeze. Plus no defrosters, not that they are all that effective anyway. I drove 40's year-round for several decades in the midwest snowbelt and remember clearing the inside of my windows with an ice scraper. Fun.

Not to highjack your thread, but tell me a little aobut you mounted your heater and how well does it work.

I can already tell you how it's going to work. See my earlier post. Maybe not a big deal in warm sunny FL or an arid climate, but the cold and snowy NE?

Heater, Seats, water, bleeding.

Heater:

The rear heater does put out enough heat to keep me warm and the V8 also adds some heat. This solution was necessary b/c the shifter for the SM420 would hit the stock front heater.

To be truthful this truck does not go on the road when is snows b/c of all the salt they put down on the roads in NYC. In fact I won't take it out until we get a few good rains and all the salt is washed off the roads. They over salt here - NYC Politics - if there is not salt covering everything the mayor gets fired!

I will have to find some sort of defroster for the windshield and have looked at some after market types. But, I have a few more months before I get ice on the windshield.

Seats:

The seats are from a Trailblazer 2003. Only issue is that you loose some of your view out of the rear window.

Water:

Truck has rino , the dynamat is rubber, so I think I should be okay in terms of rust.

Bleeding:

When you cut the dynamat the edges get real sharp - the foil is sharp - gloves are a good way to go.
