During the week after work I spent a little time cleaning off bolt heads with a brush and spraying some penetrating oil. I also loosened up all the bolts except brake lines, drive shaft bolts, and one of the steering nuts.

here is the end result of todays labor. To clean it up I rolled it out on paper and went over the whole thing with a gasket skraper, then sprayed simple green and used a plastic scrub brush and wiped it all down with a shop towel. finally a little por marine clean and a hose off. The paper caught most of the crud and made clean up pretty easy. for some reason you have to spell skraper with a k or it gets censored-----computers eh?

small problems

small problems were no tie rod puller so I discoed the steering at the box and discoed the dampner. Also the brake hose would not come off so I disco'd the hard lines. Getting the shackles pins out is easier if you let the weight off the jack then just go up a little to support the weight. The aft pins hung up on the rubber bushings but wiggled out with a screw driver. Leaving the springs on helped with moving the whole thing out to the drive way but I did pre-loosen the u bolts

essentials

The BFH is an old favorite:) and the propane torch was money well spent for the project, I also would of been stuck without the pickle fork I think. Notice the wheels are chocked front and rear of the rear tires and double jack stands, the husky 3 ton set have weight on them and the back up stands are just about touching the frame. I like the base on the husky jack stands cause they dont dig into the floor!:D

So if I remember right I removed the shocks, disconnected the steering at the box and damper, then pulled the brake lines and driveshaft bolts. Removed the front shackles, new greaseable ones are on hand. removed the rear mount pins and rolled the whole thing out to the driveway. This is where it is good to leave some free space around the vehicle!

locating the frame number, pto, etc

I noticed a number stamped in the frame up front just aft of the bumper mount I assume the frame's s/n--that was interesting I am assuming the 1 is for 71 and the s/n is 2222, hey that seems a good ju-ju number---good juju is very important!

Had a look at the emer brk it is missing it's guts, bummer!

Also had a look at the aft PTO shaft--I read a toyota manual that said you could hook up a compressor, circulating saw, pump or I imagine quite a few other things. Hmmm might be a cool way to get some onboard air!

my front pto shaft had been broken off ahead of the splined end I need to look at the winch to see where that piece goes.

I'll be rebuilding that and probably scrounging for some spare parts later.

I hope to get the front springs done and the whole diff assy coated with POR-15 by this weekend and get the rear end removed.

My HFS springs came via UPS but I only got 3 of them I hope CCOT can get that sorted out for me this week as UPS only gave a polite b/s we didn't bother to look reply and said I should contact the seller!

one man's treasure

Here is my pile of goodies--what I wouldn't give to trade my suburban garage for a barn, But I have seen people work in a lot worse conditions! hat's off to those Canadians under a tarp! On top is my Ebay rear bench--that was a find and a bargain! I'll re-cover it but it could actually work for a while it's not too bad unlike my up-front seating.

here also is the damper bolt my other problem child today-I took a direct approach and heated it up and beat the snot out of it with the BFH!:hillbilly: It's headed for the junk parts pile now!

I finally got off my but and bought a star today--this is a site worth supporting I've learned a lot on here the easy way which is not the usual method!:bang::doh:

I'll try and post more progress at the weekend--I'm off to check out some other's rides!

Oh by the way I had a change of heart on paint--couldn't go with the teal blue, could of been nice but I started looking at pumpkin orange which I liked and is right for the year but then finally turned to red. I have some Interlux fire red single stage polyurethane on the way now. I'm looking forward to that and I'll probably post that in the paint section

Happy New Year everyone:beer:

Great pictures.

Keep them coming. I am also interested in putting some new springs on my 40, so I will be watching this with interest.

Looks like alot of little things to keep you busy along with the springs.

Good luck with everything.
