UPDATE: TRUCK IS SSSOLD
she's gone . . . outta my hands . . . buh-bye . . . don't think i'll find another like it....it was a pleasure owning this legend, even for just a short time . . .
With mixed feelings, up for grabs anyway is my 1984 LHD Canadian BJ60. I purchased this rig early this year with the intention of keeping her for a long time. Since then I’ve re-evaluated our vehicle situation after finding out we’re expecting our 2nd baby in the new year. We currently have a 2 year old as well. I’m considering a more practical cruiser or a diesel van that will get plenty of DD and recreation use. I’ve realized that she’s too nice to use as a DD and be exposed to our salty winters where she’ll eventually end up like the rest of them. The PO had a winter beater most of the time so this rig stayed in a warm garage and saw little use during snow storms….which explains why she’s in such great shape. Here’s a thread I started explaining more:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/421497-2nd-thoughts-practicality-owning-nice-bj60.html
DETAILS:
- 1984 BJ 60 (OK for US import)
- Only 238K kms (148K miles) and counting…
- 2 battery 12Volts
- 5 speed
- power steering
- Original factory brown, absolutely no paint fade
- ONLY 1 owner prior to me
- Maintenance records from the day it was bought
- currently on 245/75/16’s BFG TKOs on OEM JDM 80 series alloys (with matching spare)
- came with factory chromes rims on the stock tire size, in great shape (also with matching spare, so I have 10 rims and 10 tires)
- no AC, roll up/down windows, manual locks
- aftermarket flip up moonroof
Practically bone stock except for:
- Volvo shoulder belts in the rear (stock lap belt in the middle)
- aftermarket, but outdated, pioneer cassette deck with no clock!
- small old clock that also beeps when key is taken out with lights still on (sometimes it doesn’t work)
- small indicator light in dash when PO was tried to use a Volvo electric fan, then he went back to stock rad/fan
- and 2 driving lights with switch under left vent
- clear moonroof/flips up but doesn’t come off I believe
- tow hitch
ENGINE:
- Legendary bombproof 3 B diesel running smooth, clean, and strong, no smoke (except on start up which is normal). Meticulously maintained by previous owner, has never given him any problems. She pulls tight and cruises very nicely at 2300-2500 rpm, just purrs like a kitten, slow and steady she gets you where you need to be with a smile on your face and returning 23mpg (or 9-10l/100kms)
- PO used stanadyne antigel/fuel lubricant..i currently use gen49D by powerup every tank
- mild sweat and occasional drip not exactly sure where but never had to add oil anywhere (possibly oil pan?) a while back the IP leaked so that ran down and mixed with engine gunk/grease and could also explain the older drips
- has inline coolant heater for the winters, works perfectly, starts right up on one crank in the coldest weather
- minor repair on the IP by a local diesel specialist
Thread here:
https://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/355576-3b-ip-leak-diagnosis-pics-n-vid.html
- I’ll say it again, this awesome torquey 3B is tight, starts every time, idles smoothly, pulls with confidence and will run for a looooong time. I’ve heard they keep em running for 24 hours in some mines, that’s just nuts.
TRANSMISSION:
- what else can I say about the h55F 5spd….it works, it shifts smoothly and it’s solid.
- original clutch, no complaints, can take off on 2nd gear from dead stop. i've seen many with over 300K kms on the original clutch
- rig was never offroaded, as in “wheeled over boulders, water crossings, bounced off trees, etc…”….just camping trips with the kids and pulling a camper/trailer. if anything, the most action it probably saw was on a winter run i did over a snow covered sand pit...so i guess she did offroad once
- transfer case shifts smoothly from 2hi to 4hi to 4lo and back, I’m confident it and the locking hubs got very little, if not below average use during it’s life
INTERIOR:
- the usual tear on left side of drivers seat from getting in/out
- the rest of the upholstery is in really good shape, vinyl all good, no other tears or holes anywhere else
- just slightly darker on the drivers seat from use
- all carpet in good shape (PO had to trim edges behind bench for Volvo belts)
- roof liner in great shape, odd small stain here and there, but no rips or tears
- no cracks in the dash or on the doors
- overall, very nice shape
EXTERIOR:
- in really good shape for its age except for some small bubbles forming over back window and along a couple spots on the drivers side rear fender, and very small early rust on the bottom of inner door frame
- except for that parking lot rash on the gas cap area, fuggg!
- the worst body rust is behind the drivers side wheel well, about a 1.5” hole that should be a relatively easy fix
- theres light surface rust on the window frame
- some small stone chips on the piece behind the front bumper, but the hood is almost perfect b/c the PO installed a hood deflector when new, I was the 1st one to remove it
- roof and roof rack are mint
- there are two holes and a small crack on the sideview mirrors b/c the PO also installed these extra concave mirrors so he could see more
- ALL glass and windshield are crack free, no tints
UNDERCARRIAGE/FRAME:
- solid and no rot, just surface rust
- rear frame rails and rear crossmember bar are SOLID, I took a ballpean hammer, screwdriver, and wire brush to different areas and it only revealed good metal underneath ( I wouldn’t have bought the rig if I didn’t like what I saw underneath)
- rocker panels are solid and no holes
- everything is caked in grease after 26 years of religious rustproffing
COMES WITH:
- 2 shop manuals
- the original brochure!
- owners manual (and even the inspection sheet from when it was sold)
- factory work light still in it’s bag that plugs into the dash
- bottle jack and tool kit/bag (but not entirely complete)
- 2 spare belts
- oil filters/ fuel filters/ air filter
- front rotors/pads/and front axle seal kit
- (I may or may not include the 5 16” alloy rims/tires dependingon the sale, I could still use it on my 80 and roll on 255’s…..we’ll see) Will try and clean up and polish the chrome rims and take a pic, just mild oxidation
WHAT WORKS:
- all the lights (glow plug and filter indicator light work), gauges, heater (I’ve never felt such a strong gust of hot air in any other vehicle), fans, hazards, reverse light, dash light and dimmer
- parking brake, all windows, all locks, all doors, moonroof, mirrors, horn
- rear/floor heater blows hot
- the volvo shoulder belts retracts nicely, the front belts just need a little coaxing like in most older vehicles
- front locking hubs are perfect and turn with ease
WHAT DOESN’T WORK:
- left turn signal cancel, just have to flip it up yourself, blinker works
- antennae pulls up and down but the last small piece came off, still have it, minor
- rear washer doesn't spray, but wipers and defrost work fine
WHAT IT WILL EVENTUALLY NEED:
- front axle re/re
- and might as well new rotors/pads while there….current ones are still okay, and just pulsate a little
- suspension (but currently I’m fine with how she rides still on the original springs. I have seen many many 60’s in my area still on the original springs…but boy would it be nice riding on 2.5” ome’s!)
I am asking $9000 CAN or best reasonable offer. or $9500 with extra set of 5 rims/tires
If she’s headed far away then buyer is responsible for shipping costs/procedures…but I’ll do my best to assist on my end (I’m really not familiar with this type of transaction)
I have seen what’s out there for sale, there are only a handful of these types of rigs that pop up from time to time…the rest have frames and bodies needing serious repair, and have serious high mileage, but those dang motors are just so indestructible!
Sorry for the loong ad, just trying to get as much info as i can and be transparent at the same time..i've got nothing to hide and would love to see her go to good hands and making the 3rd owner happy.
Thanks for looking.
Cheers.
