Has anyone in IH8MUD world tackled successfully a conversion of a A442f (bus tranny) to utilise the more refined ZF 8HP70x slush box? Am keen to compare notes before tackling the task. am accumulating gear at the moment and have my new to me ZF sitting in the corner of the shed already. 8speedau did a conversion on a 105 with the straight axle but I need to see what is required for a IFS rig like mine.

If on a restricted budget, I'd caution anyone on the repair and maintenance costs of a ZF transmission. If you've owned BMW, VW or Jaguars for a long time, then you probably know what you are getting into.

Yeah I had a 5HP24A s*** the bed in my D2 S8. I've heard the newer ZF's are bulletproof tho.

Zf is in mustang, f150, and charger(i think). I've had an m3 for 24 years and the synchros are getting crunchy from too many missed shifts at the track. There is no real rebuild option for the e46 so people are swapping in the same 8 speed zf as op is talking about.

There in all the ram 1500s, Durangos, grand cherokees, and some other Stellantis products, which I believe Stellantis has the right to build the zf8 here in America. The hellcats and trackhawks have an the stronger version,the zf8hp90 that has a bigger output shaft which matches the size of the bmw awd zf8hp70x, which never came in a bmw sold in NA.

Yeah I mispoke the f150 has the new 10 speed. I think mustang has 6 speed. Point was zf are durable and not exotic.

And a lot more common than people think, parts are widely available and aren't that expensive. This swap has taken off all over the world but here, seems to be more common in drifting and drag racing. Keeping my eye out for $500-1000 zf8 out of a ram because to have an awd bmw zf8 shipped here is up to $3000
 
how are these transmissions controlled in their OEM applications? seems unlikely that a stand-alone controller is used, so curious how that would be addressed (whether aftermarket stand-alone is available, or if somehow adapting whatever module is used in OEM applications for control)
 
Could be fun but the TCU prices of MAXXECU and some of the others plus adapters seems like it could be a lot more expensive than the options we're used to. But for an 8 speed, sure seems like a more reliable option. 8Speedau is doing some good work viewed on YT, zero to 60.
 
Looks like 8HP conversions are getting a lot of traction. I'm keeping my eyes out for a late model 8HP from a x3/x4m:

A couple of key questions please to enable me to map out my conversion from my a442f 4speed.

1. Who supplied your transfer case adapter? There appears to be a number of these around but their thickness varies and the subsequent modifications on the driveshafts also vary. I am awaiting supply out of the Netherlands by Patrick Roselaar currently. His adaptor is only 30mm or so and apparently does not require driveshaft mods.
2. What mounts have you utilised for the gearbox and what trimming or mods have been required on the gearbox , bodywork and other gear to enable fitment to happen.
3. Did you make your own gear lever cover and mounting or did someone else supply. Am keen to source a suitable cover and mount for my own conversion.
4. What type/brand/model of sump did you fit and did you integrate a temperature bypass as apparently the 8hp takes some time to get up to operating temperature on our Landcruisers.

Keen to see more pictures of key fitment challenges, work arounds and mods specifically for our IFS version 100 series. The Aussie folk have lots of 79 series and a 105 with the fixed axle but there does not appear to be much in the way of photos for the 100 series
