Hi guys,
I am a newby considering the purchase of a rig described this way:
1989 FJ62 fuel injected automatic overdrive inline 6, 230K. Upgrades in the last 5 years:
- 2.5 in belton suspension lift
- rebuilt transfer case which include McNamara upgrade 30 spline gear
- New bf Goodrich 33/10.5
- rebuilt front end all bearings and gaskets
- rebuilt rear diff
- throttle position
- idle control motor (sensor?)
- K&N filter
- new fuel pump and tank flush
- new exhaust and catalitic converter
Asking CA$9000
Because I am not much of a mechanic (and I do not have a place where I can work on a truck anyway) it seems ideal that a lot of the overhaul work has already been done. I talked to the current owner but I have not seen the truck yet (a few hours away). I am told that there is only a couple of minor rust spots (bottom of one door and one rear fender) and that there is an oil leak on back of the engine (main rear seal??). Price seems high for an 18yo truck but then again, not too many of those up here in Canada. What do you guys think about some of these components above and what likely still needs to be done in the near future?
There is so much knowledge on this board, your thoughts will be much appreciated.
Cheers!

Once you go see it, take alot of pics and post them here so people can give you an educated opinion on actual worth. Welcome to Mud

Just be aware that a high-mileage 18-yo vehicle, no matter how well made, is going to require a lot of maintenance. Owning a Cruiser this old is more of a crime of passion, not exactly rational. Seals will start to leak (if they aren't already), basic things will start to wear out and fail, etc etc etc.

The way I look at it is the big ticket items are the engine and the AT. Then you have to figure in the rust. At 230k you are running on borrowed time on the big ticket items. $9000 and the AT goes in 20,000 miles was it worth it? The frame and body would have to be near perfect for me to take that risk.

I agree, keep looking Unless the body is MINT and you can afford 9K -

I see lots of Clean Cruisers on Craigslist and Ebay for half of that or less.

Way to much money! For this price you can get a nice Diesel Truck, that get twice the mileage and is much more fun to drive.
I bought my 62 with less miles on it in great condition from Florida and drove it up to Nova Scotia. The auto tranny gave up 10k later. Thank god I converted it to Diesel and manual transmission.
I would say take a chance on it for 3-4k, but 9k is too much.

X3!!!
WAAAAY too high IMOP!
As mentioned...Craigslist is the SHIZZZ! There are some awesome deals on there...Its where I found mine for 2500.00 with 219K and some rust!

Chicago

It also sounds to me as if he is (or was) trying to solve some fuel supply problems by throwing parts at it!
Im in the same boat with a warm start issue!

It seems high to me too. Remember a well rebuilt auto trans can run you $3,000-$3,500. For 9k there should be no rust.

Dynosoar :zilla:

I'm with the "that's too much money" crowd.

I can't get past the mileage, either. Too many miles for that price.

Great come backs. Thanks guys.
Clear that the opinion is that price is too high.
Not sure if I will go out to see it or not.
Cheers.

ya, I have an 84 60 that has about the same amount of miles. the main difference is that it has a manual tranny. the rest of it is similar, except the price. I paid 2 grand for mine, which is a pretty good price, but 9000 really is over the top. you can always try talking to the guy again to see why he could possibly think his truck is remotely worth that.

Look at diesels if your in Canada. No point wasting your money on a 10-12 mpg gasser.

See outback imports or Luxury imports for JDM unit, no rust and low KMs.

Out west the diesel canadian cruisers tend to be in better shape.

A good BJ60 goes for about 3-10k . 3 being mech good but body ugly. 10k should be lower kms(under 300K) and only a few specks of rust, solid frame)

IMOP only. Gasser is worth 50% less ...........
