Yes, that is the CV tulip housing disconnected from the hub. Sigh... more money to spend three days from my big roadtrip. Thanks, dad for never doing any maintenance at all on your car. You're the best. Anybody willing to donate a car to drive a thousand miles?

235,000 miles on original boots. Rubber so hard it overpowered everything else and ripped it out of the hub. Et voila. Money fire pit.

I've only seen that happen on cars that had shorter than OEM CV shafts installed.

Just spent the last 45 minutes walking up and down my driveway and the closest street looking for the c-clip. No luck. I can't imagine what could cause the clip to separate from the assembly or what could cause it to break... The last service I had done was at a Lexus dealer for a timing belt. Surely they don't need to remove CV's for a timing belt job... Do they? I'll dig around and see if the c-clip somehow got pushed out or misaligned and is actually still on the shaft.


EDIT: I believe I may have found the issue. There's nothing wrong with the c-clip at all. The outer rubber boot split clean around. The c-clip did its job, but the 10 year old rubber failed. It's not actually disconnected from the hub. The joint is simply pulled back a little bit.

EDIT EDIT: I'm actually a neanderthal and was looking at the inboard side in my FSM.

Well, I called up toyota parts and got a quote for 70 bucks off a cv joint. Gave it to me for wholesale price. Toyota of Morristown hires awfully nice parts people. The people inside the dealership and service, though, that's a different story. So I'm bringing it to them on Friday, hoping they mechanics are not as bad as I hear. I suppose beggars can't be choosers, though. I need it done, and fast. I think CV axles for a LC and LX are the same, right? Shouldn't be any difference.

And Brokerob1: That's awfully kind of you. I'm sure I could get my dad to pass up the keys to his 06, though if it came down to that. Are you near Rausch Creek? That seems to be the closest ORV place to me since NJORVP closed. Maybe we can wheel some day.
