Thanks Bambi. The next thing I suppose will be to get the head down to Cairns and have it worked over so that I can run her on normal unleaded fuel and fit the motor and gearbox back it. I still have to sort out the rear springs which are giving me grief.

Well I took the head to the engine reconditioners in Cairns the other day and left it with them. I went down today to check on how it is going and was told that there was a crack in the head. They have rung all their suppliers and contacts about obtaining another head however were just laughed at when they told them it was for an F motor. So I rang a mate in Ipswich who owns his own 4wd diesel business and he made a call to a mate of his who runs his own engine reconditioning business. Well supriseeeeee he has a fully rebuilt F motor which he rebuilt for a customer about 3 years ago who never returned to pick it up. It has been rebored, new pistons, rings, bearings, welsh plugs and the head has been also rebuilt. Managed to score it for $1500.00. Just got to get it from Ipswich to Cooktown now. Also picked up a new radiator, brake master cylinder, clutch master cylinder, clutch slave cylinder and have all the brake wheel cylinders fully reconditioned. Will post pics when I get back home to Cooktown.

Hi lucky Ken.
Next time I want a part you get the job to to track it down.
Even with the freight to Cook Town bargain price for an F Motor.
Well done clap
Cheers

Thanks Bambi will let you know how it goes. How is your project going with the paint.

Hi Ken
Customers make for slow progress on a Forty Series.
Solution .
I have employed a painter to take over. He starts Friday. With any luck we should be able to put some color down end of next week. I'm not going back to China till it's painted.
Getting itchy feet Ken I want to become a Grey Nomad .
Cook Town is on my visit list.
Cheers

Cool look forward to seeing the end result. I know what it is like to have itchy feet have had them since I was 13 and am still moving around.

Great Thread! Coming along nicely. The body looked to be in great shape no?

Picked up the break cylinders today after having them fully rebuilt. Turns out they were already fully stainless steel sleeved.

Radiator surround is now done and here are a few other bits and pieces that I picked up while in Cairns. Hopefully get all the brakes back together on Monday and Tuesday.

For those of you who have told me that Jade is an ODDBALL of a vehicle I would like to set a few things straight. You are 100% correct I think. There are too many things with this vehicle that do not make sense. I checked the engine and chassis number which show it should be a 1971 model. The tail/brake lights which I don't think came out in Australia. Pulling the front end apart and finding the ball and claw axle which was used in the early to late 60's. Now I go to fit the brake shoes and find out the ones that I ordered were the wrong ones. I ordered part number N1415 which should be for a 71-80 model 40 and find out that they are 75mm wide. After a few more calls today I find out that the Part number for these brake shoes should be 1083 which fits a 63-70 model. Can someone please explain what is going on.

Awesome work so far!
You have been cursed with POM (Previous Owner Mods) :worms:This dreaded affliction has resulted in your truck having parts from several different years.
You just have to deal with the issues as you find them. Your choice is to return it to OEM, (based on the frame and body), or leave it as is and deal with it. I would make detailed notes of what you find so the next owner, (or you if you keep it), will know what parts to get for what.

Brake drums have been cleaned up and should have the flywheel and new brake shoes up from Cairns later this week. I am looking at towing the chassis down to Cairns and having all the brake lines completely redone.

Can someone please explain what is going on.

If in fact it was originally shipped to africa... well... that is your answer of why it is a bit of an odd ball...

starting in the early 1960's toyota was shipping CKD kits to south africa ... that is Complete Knock Down kits... these are parts boxed up and sent to africa for assembly... From what I have read and understand the SA assemblies were 1/2 par with assembly issues and inner company problems... maybe some issues were the fact toyota was sending kits of parts from 'overstock' ? .... or... maybe the organization in SA poor ... either one is likely

and the tail lights with added amber light I had seen before on and aussie truck... just as LITP stated we came up that it must have been done that way for import... i think i saved pics of that one and one other... I'll need to look

Thanks Johnny if you could find the pics that would be great.

Well I got the spring hangers almost where I want them but had to be a bit drastic to get there. Will let them sit for a while to see if they settle.

Great progress Ken,

I don't think you ever mentioned how you approached the PO....

I've got an eye on a couple here, a Troopie and a Ute (dunno if they're FJ/HJ)

The troopie would be good for parts, the ute I'd clean and resell.

Just need to clean up some room first.

Dan

Thanks dancar. Basically I heard that the PO had one that he might be selling so I just drove up and asked him if he was selling it. Whats the worst thing he could say. "NO"

Well picked up the new brake shoes today and hopefully these ones should fit. Also got the fly wheel back nicely machined.
