WTF? AC (Which blows extremely cold when its functioning) sometimes will not come on or is delayed.

Hello all. This is somewhat of a weird issue i'm having. I will start my 2006 LX470 and the AC will not blow or make any sound. I will either sit there (or drive around) for a minute or five and all the sudden it kicks on and works perfectly. The display functions normally. It doesnt seem like a short bc bumps or sudden jarring have zero effect. This same issue happened in December of last year but it "fixed itself" and I forgot about it until now. Thanks in advance.

Once it comes on after the initial few minutes does it work normally again?

I'm not very experienced with AC but I suspect you need to check your pressure to see if you have enough refrigerant in the system. Otherwise I suppose the AC clutch or gap could be a possible culprit.

Once it does come back on it functions completely normally.

My thoughts on the refrigerant issue is the system would act much more erratic or not at all if the level was close to being low and triggering it to be disabled.

There are no weird noises associated with the system either.

I have been having a similar issue. I believe the blower is having trouble starting. When mine doesn't start, I lean over into the passenger seat and give the blower (located under the glove box) a smack and it usually starts up. Now how to fix it actually? I am not sure yet. I haven't had time to investigate.

Anything below 22 PSI (I believe) will prevent the compressor from engaging to prevent damage. As others have suggested, check pressure. Hopefully something simple like that. Good luck and let us know what you find.

I had that issue with my 2000. Replaced the blower with OEM back in 2018. I figured after that many years, it was time.

And I assume that cleared up the issue? Mine is an '07, so working on 15 years.

Just a few of the more common possibilities:

If issue is form bad blower motor above PS foot well. It would be bad during heating or cooling. Their supper easy to replaces the motor. 3 screws and 1 wire housing block.

If AC not working in auto control, except when in "max cold". Likely sensor just under IG key (small vent slits), hose is off back side.

if does not blow very cold when working. Likely needs a recharge and likely system has a leak.

It happened again this weekend and I tried the "smack it" solution. And i'll be a monkeys uncle, IT WORKED!! That means it got to be a problem with the blower motor on some level.

I don't see why the blower motor is in question. When your turn on your vents, does it push air? The blower either spins or doesn't ,shouldn't affect the AC compressor from functioning. Am I missing something?

I have to smack the a/c controls in the summer sometimes. The heat must be getting to the connections or the boards. Works 100% of the time once smacked though.

Have you reviewed my thread on A/C problems? My "smack the controls" efforts worked as well. 1998s have the old style knob controls. The resistor nut behind the temperature control knob was loose. Tightening it solved the issue for a short time. Finally, I replaced the resistor and haven't had an issue since. This is a common problem on the old style Toyotas.
