Wanted WTB - first FJ40

Hello all - longtime lurker on the site. I'm in the market for my first FJ40, and keeping an eye on this site, Hemings, Craigslist, etc. Preference would be for a 77 to 80 with either the 2F or a V8 swap with 4 or 5 spd. Budget is $15-20k. I realize that's probably smack dab in the sweet spot of the desirable market. ;-)


I'm located in S. Carolina but willing to travel to look. Thanks in advance(and apologies if this should be posted elsewhere)!

IMO...
1.) Be patient. Impatience costs money
2.) Don't settle. You will be unhappy and unhappiness is expensive
3.) Cheap....isn't
4.) See #1

1 last opinion...don't buy anything imported from SA. Buy a US domestic market product. It is more likely to have the features you are looking for and not FUBAR'd with icing smeared on it. JMO. Several sites and links here on MUD will have the specifications for US domestic market FJ40s. Ask for advice and share photos....the guys here are more than happy to help you. I wish I had followed the advice available on MUD
 
I would love to get my budget in that price range. Every time it gets close, life happens. Not willing to part with my 80 so boo hoo for me. Mud members are brutally honest and fair so keep watch here and be ready when "the" 40 comes up. With that price range, you will get a nice, solid, original, useable/drivable fun project I think. Good luck! Mine is gonna happen soon too.
 
Dont get horny and buy the 1st one. Patience is a virtue in the cruiser world it can take months and years to find the perfect one for you.

I sold my 67 and took me 9 months to find a 45 then i sold that and waited 8 more months to find a 42.

Thanks, I'm fortunate to be in no rush. I'm also fortunate to have a fellow Mud member here helping me sort out the good from the bad. Great site here and great people.

Thanks...I'm in no hurry which is a luxury.
 
What are you going to use it for? What will make you smile every time you fire it up or look out your window at it? With that budget, you're fortunate to have a wide range of options. You could buy ...

Injected SBC backed by NV4500 or H55F, out to SOA FJ60 axles, both locked, Saginaw power steering, on 36s. In other words, a rig built for rocks that will also ... uh, accelerate briskly and maintain 80 MPH without sending the pistons thru the block.

Or desmogged (or not) 2F, maybe 2FE conversion, H41 swap or stock H42, open diffs or one locker, spring under 2.5" lift, OEM P/S swap or FJ60 P/S conversion, uncut rear fenders, 33x10.50s on stock steelies with caps, no rust, nice paint, no rock rash.

Those are very different rigs and both within your budget if you're patient and ready with cash when it pops.

Or, maybe you don't know ... or want them all. Yeah, me too. Point: Food for thought. Go look and drive a few. Take pics and post up. Looking forward to what you find!

Thanks for the input. Much more of option 2...this will be somewhat of a daily driver, beach trips, drive to the mountains for fly fishing/mtn biking, and occasionally some trails. Not looking for a garage queen, so a few dents, scratches, work needed, etc won't bother me.
 
Yes this group of mudders are a wicked awesome bunch!!! The lengths we go to help each other out i have seen in no other car/truck forums. Im on a few diff diesel ones as that was my 1st passion and they are nowhere near the tight knit group we have going here.

I bought my 42 from a memeber here and i bought it without seeing it in person. He showed me every issue it had and did not try to hide anything. So many people would just breeze past issues and hope you never saw them till you got it home and gave it a good once over.

Forever greatful for my new friends ive made here over the last 12 years.
