Hi! (Man I wish this forum existed the first time I did this)

When I was 15, my dad said "You know, those Landcruisers have always been cool rigs. You want to go look at one?" So off we went down the road a few miles only to return with a powdre blue '67 FJ40 for $1200. It ran, the guages worked, it had little to zero body rust... what a find! This find managed to hole a piston about 3 hours later during it first trip up logging roads. It needed some work, but no big deal, we'll rebuild the engine, and throw some new paint on it.

3 Years later:

It's on the road with saginaw PS, 33x12.50, viper red paint, 350 v8, th350 auto, custom dual shock setup, rear gas tank, etc, etc.

The thing is, I was a teenager and it wasn't my money so a lot of things weren't done right. Now I'm 32 and it's time to do it again... but way... way better.

I have her all the way down to the frame (again) and want to get all my suspension and other fab work finished before I blast and coat the frame. I'd thought I'd run my overall plan by the experts here and see if you think I'm headed in the right direction.

  • want to run 36-37 inch tires
  • planning to do an SOA
  • undecided on shackle reversal
  • will convert to hi-steer
  • considering 60/62 axles
  • 60/62 axles extension sleeve looks like the way to go
  • still open to linked 80 series setup with Johnny Joints
  • Lockers will be installed (only have auburn LSD in rear)
Overall, I'm going for reliable all around offroad capability and the ability to drive it on road occasionally.

Here she is. I have some light body work to do, but that's down the road. The frame was blasted and coated with industrial cylinder enamel the first time so it's ready to go. (meaning no rust of any importance)

Looks good and sounds like a good plan. Be sure to update with pictures during your build!

I figured I'd update with my current status/plan. I think I'll be able to secure some 62 axles tomorrow. After speaking with Proffitt's, I'll be ordering their outboard kit, trusses and perches so I can build them up myself.

Right, now, I have custom front dual shock towers that I built myself out of the original towers. They worked very well, but they are ugly and I'll need to move them anyhow. What are you guys doing for front shocks these days? Anyone have a good clean setup for dual on the front (hoops?) or is one going to be enough? (I'm guessing it is).

Anyhow, here is where I'm at now, along with some "what it's like to live where my FJ lives" shots. :)

P.S. This is the firs time I've really put my Ucoatit Epoxy floor coating to the test. So far, it's holding up very well. It's nice to not worry about ATF, oil, whatever leaking and spilling, especially during a teardown. If anyone has any questions PM me.

First off, you gotta have the right tunes for this kind of stuff.

Secondly, loud stero, TV, coffee maker and keg cups for beer are going to be in full use.

No pics worthy for an update just yet, but I did manage to get the shock towers that I had previously built off with virtually no indication that they were ever welded on. We had plug welded them so I was able to drill them out. Only some small dimples are left from the drilling. I can fill those easily.

The real update is that my FJ62 axles are on the way as well as a SOA kit for the front and a full 4 link kit for the rear from Proffitt's. (thanks for the assist on the phone). :D

Next up will be rear frame boxing kit from ruffstuff. In three weeks I'm going to have a lot of welding to get to! I think it might be time to get one of these... just need a way to get one in a cruiser design.

Found some frame alignment issues that I needed to straighten out. I guess jumping it was not the best idea. A lot of my ideas from my early twenties can be categorized that way.

What could possibly go wrong....

Nice work man. I love the "To do" diagram! We'll have to round up some of the crew and play flipper in your garage again!
