Sorry a newbie question about diff oil. I just installed ARB Skid plates and was planing to change the diff fluids, but when I removed the fill plug, front was full and the fluid looked brand new, no discoloration at all. So the question is would you still change it? Does the fluid looking good at the fill give any reliable indication of life of the fluid?

Bought the '11 Gx with 65k and now near 70k. Car is in great shape, wasn't built for off roading, and the previous owner appears to have done his own maintenance, K&N engine filter, a very well laided out and wired battery charger, block heater and oil/trans heaters (vehicle was in Fairbanks, AK), KN filter over air pump intake, etc. So I am reasonably sure the oil was changed recently.

Thanks

It’s cheap enough to go ahead and replace it for the peace of mind of a baseline.

I’m also with Washingtontaco though, if it looks good then it’s not a big deal if you wanna roll with it till the next due date.

I would. I bought a CPO 2017 with 33k miles and changed it for my own peace of mind. The front diff and transfer case fluid looked ok. The rear diff had a lot more sludge collected on the magnet than the front.

Thanks for the comments, will plan to change it at the next oil change.

I changed mine out on both diffs and the t-case at 30K, I plan to do it again at 60K if I don't install lower gears and lockers before then. I would change it simply for base line reasons and peace of mind.

I did TCase / Front Diff and Rear Diff using mobil 1 gear oil 75W90, did not use Toyota golden oil. So far so good, it’s been like 6k miles.
