Hi there,

I'm looking for a 5-speed gearbox to mate with a 3B in my FJ40. They don't come up very often in NZ but this has come up locally and am wondering if it's worth grabbing?

Owner states:

"Removed from wrecked truck so condition not known, but was told the gearbox is in good condition, but there is bearing noise in the transfer case. Gear oil was clean from gearbox, but black and thick and low level in transfer case, with noticeable oil leak from rear output seal. 270,000km on the speedo."

I know nothing about these - I don't mind having to spend a couple of hundred bucks to recondition the gearbox (kind of expect it) but no point in spending another 700 on repairs.

Thoughts and advice gladly welcomed ;o)

Cheers.

It could be fine. It sounds to me like the seal went that's between the xfer and transmission meaning the oil went from the xfer to tranny rendering the xfer in need of some work and the tranny potentially fine.

Also you sort of imply that the tranny is 700$? If so thats a good price

Waiting to find out what engine it came off. If it turns out to be an H/F engine then I'll need to swap out the input shaft (which I seem to recall from past threads is a PITA).

But the thought of a rebuilt 5 speed on a turbo'd 3B is kinda nice ;o)

Happy with the 13BT and 5-speed? I'm not expecting it to be a rocket-ship but hoping it will happily overtake with motorway cruising (so needs to be able to power up from 100 kph to 120 kph for short bursts).

If your cooling system can handle it, the engine should be more than capable of that type of overtaking, gears and tires dependant.

thanks Wayne - the speed limits here are 50 kph for city and 100 kph for open-road (you can't really call a 2 lane road that sometimes becomes 3 lanes a "motorway"!) so sounds like that shouldn't stress the engine too much ;o)

Very happy with it, just wound up the fuel and boost, it flies. Will easily pull from 100 to 120 in 5th

Yup will do it easily my BJ75 (13B-T/H55F) is the same just pulls along fine in 5th and happily cruises quite quickly to 120k even with 35" sneakers on except when fully loaded hahaha.

excellent news :bounce:
