Would someone be able to verify that this is a inner axle seal that has given out?! (1 Viewer)

My driverside birfield seems to be leaking a mix of grease and diff oil. It would be awesome if someone could verify my theory? What is the best rebuild kit to buy?

Also check your axle housing vent on the top left of the housing. Remove the fitting, clean the hole and the fitting to make sure the axle can "breathe".

Thank you, Do I do this during the rebuilding process, or right now while I am trying to survive till the weekend to do the rebuild?

You can do it ahead of everything else. It MAY reduce the transfer of gear oil to the birf knuckle, as it heats up, pressurizes and pushes fluid out. Then, as it cools, it sucks grease mix back in, so your diff is contaminated as well.

It's not JUST the seal that fails.

I had just rebuilt the front of mine and had this problem, then realized I forgot to clean the vent. I cleaned the vent and my problem went away. Not saying your will go away, but it definitely WON'T hurt and if you want, buy about 6 ft of 1/4" ID fuel hose, a few hose clamps, and a 1/4" fuel filter, then extend the line up and over the brake booster. Bypass the original vent.

Thank you for your advice, I am a relatively new fj80 owner. Another question for you... So when I will be rebuilding the front birfields I will need a birfield rebuilt kit, and what else do I need to buy?

54mm socket for wheel bearings.

The trail-gear one uses a 3/8 ratchet.

As @whitrzac stated, get a 54 MM socket, @NLXTACY has one available at Wits' End, Solutions for Problems You Didn't Know You Had that also incorporates the (3) notches for doing the REAR axle when that day comes.

Another resource is Slee, for axles if you need to actually replace them.

Also, Toyota Parts | Toyota Online Parts | Genuine Toyota Parts | Toyota Parts Online for actual Toyota parts and www.partsouq.com for Toyota parts from the UAE for relatively cheap, but you MUST compare.

If you do not know your truck's maintenance history, you may want to consider a COMPLETE front wheel bearing / knuckle rebuild kit from @cruiseroutfit (Kurt) and maybe even call him to have a discussion about what all you need.

Thank you for the guidance! I will update on this thread as I begin the rebuild.

Thank you!

I've got my knuckle rebuild box of goodies from Kurt sitting on my workbench ready to be used! Now to find the time!

I feel the struggle, I am a High School student but thankfully I took weekends off work this month. Best of luck to you!
Geez, make me feel old why don't you! :flipoff2: 43 years removed from my HS days! Last knuckle job on my 80 was 9 years ago.

Age is just a number my friend, plus you have valuable insight into the world of LC so I wouldn't be jealous. I appreciate your knowledge.
