Found out today that the cracked manifolds are covered by the warranty. About six months ago I noticed a ticking noise from the engine. At first it was only after 5+ hours of driving in hot weather. I could make the ticking louder when parked, placing the transmission is drive, and pressing the accelerator while my other foot was on the brake (ie, engine under load). Recently the ticking became louder--now most obvious when the engine is cold. Its fairly subtle, I don't think the average Joe new to the vehicle would even notice. That was the main reason for going to the dealership...

The brakes do pulsate somewhat, even after new pads. (I've never had the rotors turned, not sure about the previous owner. As suggested, I'll let the dealership do the warranty work and take care of the other things with my neighborhood mechanic when time/money permit.

Wow..Thanks Drew !!

I am sure glad you set us straight on what a piece of crap these 100`s are...

Now that I know this, I am gonna go trade mine in on a used 80 tomorrow...Well, that is if I can get it started, the transmission will actually go into gear, the front wheel doesnt collapse into the wheel well, OR the diff doesn`t grenade on me...

Well, even if none of those things happens (this time, of course)..I am sure that I will pass out from the huge exhaust leak under the hood....

On second thought....I think I will take my chances and keep it...For some reason, I actually kinda like my 100... :flipoff2:

Easy there Sin-I like them too. Just thinking that the later ones may be the one to get. I like the idea at least of the 5 speed tranny, thinking it may have a deeper first gear. When I'm more seriously looking I'll be back for more advice.

As for trading on a used 80-well that's a good idea. Shotts has gone that route. What year is your 100? Maybe we can work something out.:flipoff2:

Broken front diffs - Throw in an ARB and you'll have no worries there. 2000+ have the 4 pinion until you do.

Cracked maniflods - This does seem to be happening more often lately, although this can be welded instead of replacing.

Broken A arms - Show me how often this has happened in the States. Very rare.

Bad 4 speed transmissions - I only know of 2 that have been reported on this forum. This isn't some epidemic to worry about.

Starters under the intake maniflod - yes, this is a pita, not looking forward to this. But, at the same time, how often do you deal with this, every 80-100K miles?

Some significant stumbles by Mr. T on their flagship truck! So what's the year to buy? I'm thinking when gas is $4 per gallon it will be time to buy. I'm thinking a 2003 or 2004?

The 100 is overall a very reliable vehicle. I wouldn't sweat purchasing one in the future. 2001 is my favorite. :D

Cruiserdrew forgot the whole TPS gremlin issue. By far the most serious issue going and still poorly understood.

- I hate it when the haters forget the only "common" problem I've experienced.

Toyota isnt the only one with the starter under the manifold, I read this morning an article by a Cadillac engineer, explaining why the Northstar engine has the starter in the valley under the manifold, of course he acted like they're the ones that thought of it. Same reasons though, not near exhaust heat, protected from the elements, etc...

Holy $hit. That's a big hit.

manifold crack

I know the manifolds can be welded if they crack, but if you have to remove them anyway to have them welded, why not just replace them? The labor ro remove & reinstall is the expensive part - I think new manifolds from CDAN are in the $250ea price range....

Not if you're doing the labor yourself. :) Going your way, this job is way over a $1000. :frown: My way, its less than a hundred bucks, and that's paying someone else to do the welding. If you can weld, this repair costs you nothing but time.

Why are they cracking anyway? I haven't had a chance to even look at mine. Are they cast iron? Does anybody have a picture of the cracks? Do they all crack in the same areas?

What would an aftermarket manufacturer do differently? Most aftermarket headers are stainless steel--even less durable than cast iron.

Only Mud owners have cracked ones. All the other owners think every thing is OK and keep driving their LC/LX's :)

To be perfectly honest I've never had a Toyota that DIDN"T have a cracked exhaust manifold. 87 4runner had it, 92 4runner had it, 04 taco has a mystery sound beginning in that vicinity. All of my vehicles are exposed to so much mud I just chalk it up to that. For me this is definitely not a weak point of the 100 but a weak point of the brand, not that I really am bothered by it. :D I used to have a mechaninc that could brazen the hell out of those manifolds, I'd get a year or two of silence out of $30 or so. To bad he's retired. The 87 'runner with the 22re was the worst.

I'm interested to see how the a-arms/t-bars/diffs handle when these older 100's start seeing more off-road usage now that the price is getting closer to wheeler budgets. We hear about it all the time from down under. I've heard all the different rumors concerning the a-arms failure and they appear to be situations my 100 sees pretty regularly. I'm just one lucky SOB! :D

Think I'll throw on the swampers and go knock on some wood with my sliders.

Another newbie/rookie question but what happens if you don't replace them? Also How long does it take to pull them yourself? I am assuming that you could not weld them while on the truck?

I have? I traded for an 80? When? :D

If any trading were going on it wouldn't be a 100 for an POC 80. :D

Its all good Drew !

The only pot-shots that I can take are here in with the 100 owners, because I am too much of a wimp to go into the 80 series forum and pipe off !!
:crybaby:

I momma always said " remember, there is safety in numbers " ;)

I guess my point (if there was one) is that even though I hear about all these "issues" with the 100`s...I have not seen a large (or any, really) amount
of these gremlins show up on our local vehicles...sure, we see a starter here and there, and a manifold here and there...but no more than any other Toyota truck model that comes through..

I have over 100,000 HARD miles on mine, and the only real problem I`ve had is the "dreaded" manifold leak on cold mornings... I guess I am lucky ?

BTW...I didnt mean to pi$$ anyone off with my poking comments, lord knows I have had more than a few aimed at me in here ;)

Oh, and that really hurt FirstToy !!...comparing ME to Shotts !! :flipoff2: ;p

love u guys !! :D

Only wack-jobs wheel their 100's off road. :D You need to trade for an 80 Tad! :D

It's true. I read it on the net. :flamingo:

Of course I would like an 80 in addition to the 100, and a 40, and a...... :crybaby:

I had a FZJ80 and all I ever heard was you better repack your birfields before they blow-up and drip grease all over everything. Never happened in the 135K+ miles that I owned it. I wish I could of bought a "new" zero miles FZJ80 I think they are the best looking LC ever made. But the 100 series is really nice and built a little heavier then the 80 series.

Yer lucky! The more hard core you are with your 100 the more attention you get, though nagative at times. :) I'll start calling you "brother".

I'm sure that most of those nasty comment makers really want your 100 SINCITY100, though they won't admit it on the forum. Hold your head high! :D

Have you heard this saying?
“If it has tits or tires, it’s going to give you trouble sooner or latter.”
