I took the 2000LC (80,000 miles) to the dealership for an oil change and to 1) check out a ticking noise when cold; and 2)slow/noisy power window.

They called back today with an estimate: $2300 to replace cracked exhaust manifold (L and R); also said oxygen sensors will probably need to be replaced, $300 each; $700 to replace warped front brake rotors; $645 to replace motor for window. They said with a straight face that if I had all this work done, they would throw me a bone--replace timing belt, $585. Grand total: about $4500!!. The service manager made me feel much better when he added that other than these "required" repairs, the vehicle is an excellent condition.

They only work I'm considering getting done there is the manifold, pending coverage by the Toyota Extended Warranty (currently under discussion).

The good news is I used my valued customer coupon and got a great deal on the oil change.

Wow I need to open a dealership! Where are you, even I'll do some of that work for that kind of $!

O2 sensors? Maybe, but not yet needed I don't think. No way on the brakes, that's simply ridiculous! And I would be very suprised if the rotors are warped; I'm calling foul on that one unless you've been having some serious braking issues?

Sorry to hear that. If my manifolds ever crack, I'd consider having the new ones ceramic coated inside and out before installing them.

so what noises were these manifolds making and when exactly?

If you don't feel the brake pedal pulsate when you apply the brakes how can the rotors be warped?

Current labor rates are anywhere from 85-150 dollars an hour, depending on what part of the country you reside in. A day's worth of labor can easily top a thousand bucks.

Dealership must be slow.

Yep, they saw you coming.
And they did all that diagnosis for free? Wow, that was a deal.

Faulty O2 sensor should set a diagnostic code and CEL.

The reason the sensors are on the "shopping list" is because they are mounted in the exhaust manifolds. Replacing the manifold(s) requires swapping the sensor(s) and if they won't come out or if they strip on the way out (happens often) they have to be replaced as well.

Did the manifolds appear to be aproblem when you brought it in there, or were they nice enough to "find" the problem for you?...

Do these manifolds crack/warp ?..sure, but it is usually the customer that brings it in for this reason due to an unusual noise when first starting the engine (cold)

My manifolds are a bit noisey, but my 100 is a (mainly) Off-road vehicle, and it has so many other strange noises, that I could care a less about fixing it .

As far as the discount on the T-belt...GEE, HOW GENEROUS

Watch those guys !!

Hmm...I wonder if they DIDN`T, in-fact, damage the Sensors..would they still replace them anyway because you agreed to the full repair ?... :frown:

expensive oil change . . .

If they don't honor the warrantee, take them up on the $585 timing belt job and bag the rest ;)

Take the manifolds off yourself and find a small machine shop & have them welded. I bet the shop will even swap the sensors if you take new ones to them. Buy new sensors (fronts only, rears are redundant) from www.oxygensensors.com

Do the brakes later at your convenience. Take the door panel off yourself and study the window mechanism & see why it's binding.

Broken front diffs

Cracked maniflods

Broken A arms

Bad 4 speed transmissions

Starters under the intake maniflod

Some significant stumbles by Mr. T on their flagship truck! So what's the year to buy? I'm thinking when gas is $4 per gallon it will be time to buy. I'm thinking a 2003 or 2004?

Wow..Thanks Drew !!

I am sure glad you set us straight on what a piece of crap these 100`s are...

Now that I know this, I am gonna go trade mine in on a used 80 tomorrow...Well, that is if I can get it started, the transmission will actually go into gear, the front wheel doesnt collapse into the wheel well, OR the diff doesn`t grenade on me...

Well, even if none of those things happens (this time, of course)..I am sure that I will pass out from the huge exhaust leak under the hood....

On second thought....I think I will take my chances and keep it...For some reason, I actually kinda like my 100... :flipoff2:
