I'm in the market for a used 2007 Land Cruiser and noticed several have the wood grain trim. Not a fan. Is it removable, exposing the standard trim? If so, would removing it marr the underlying trim? Are standard trim kits available? Thanks.

From what I have read, it is time-consuming, works best when using a strong heat source and can pull up paint from the center console area (since that part is painted). A lot of members have done it though.

Oh yeah, you might need some Goo Gone too.

Albeit, I have a couple of 98 LC's, but I don't believe there is any painted surfaces under the wood trim. At least not on either of ours. Also, IPA (IsoPropyl Alcohol) works good for removing adhesive.

Do a Google for wood trim. There are a couple of places that have replacement trim in many kinds of wood, carbon fiber, brushed metal, and solid colors. So if you don't like the surfaces without trim (or you screw up some of the surfaces e.g. scratched, etc.), you could go with one of the none wood options.

FYI, The center gear shift surround on mine had painted black plastic. Removing the wood trim messed it up bad. The dash trim and door panel trim removed cleanly.

Remove each trim piece. Put a cookie sheet in your oven and put it on 170-degrees.

Place each trim piece in the oven for about 3-5 minutes and remove.

Use a plastic putty knife and slide the edge under the fake wood trim pieces to get them to lift off the plastic.

Once you get them hot and get the process started w/ the putty knife, it goes pretty easily.

Careful with the Extreme Goo Gone stuff. It melted the plastic trim, so I ended up having to paint it.

I peeled and replaced on one of my 80s, looked nice. I did it in the summer using a heat gun, went very well. There are plenty of trim kits out there to choose from, carbon fiber or chrome or various grades of wood or whatever.

I agree I just purchased a 99 LC from the original owner in December and I picked up all of my Toyota emblems yesterday to get rid of the "Gold" package. Had the pinstripes removed and buffed as well and lastly I just ordered from Toyota all of the interior trim in standard Black to replace the wood grain. Parts person at Toyota called and said was at $165 for everything and he was just waiting on the cupholder so I guess $200 total and just replace it! I took this into consideration because the LC only had 100k miles and owned by a female Doctor so the interior (meaning dash pad, armrest, seats etc...) are in perfect shape and the new trim pieces won't look out of place. As the dealer told me :I order Black pieces all the time for customers, Funny how the GOLD packages went away from style"!:)

ya we have one of the machines that apply the gold color just collecting dust inthe closet. i havent seen it used in years and i dont think anyone even remembers how to use it since the only person that applyed the gold package got fired years ago.

any ideas on how to replace the wood on the steering wheel. I like the wood in mine, and everything looks brand new. However the wood on y wheel is completely dried out and cracked. it looks likes lizard skin.

Easy removal of wood trim

The trim is held on by a combination of double sided tape like stuff and glue with the consistency of stiff rubber cement.

On my '99 cruiser the "wood" appliques were pretty ratty, so I removed them by slowly peeling them off, then used Goof Off to remove the glue and double sided tape. it took about 45 minutes and looks great. You don't need to remove the panels from the truck.

I have real wood trim :flipoff2:

I've heard that real wood fades quicker than the fake and will crack. I too am a real wood proponent, put I don't want to replace the trim every other year or so.

Easiest is to paint over the wood trim. There is a thread on that in here. Otherwise do as in post 12 - get the black plastic pieces from the dealer.

Just take into consideration how good you want it to look verses how good of a craftsman you are.
