I contacted TOA, they found my VIN, but could not tell me if my vehicle had the recall work performed.

if they can't tell you and you don't have the sticker, which no one seems to have, maybe they'll cover it.

UPDATE: I do not know if they ever determined that my 81 60 actually had the service done, but after talking to 3-4 people at Ralph Hayes Toyota, and 4-5 people at Toyota of America, they agreed to do the work. Greg at RHT has been great to deal with, he said it would take some time to order the parts because you had to order each piece individually, but it only took 2 days. This 60 is a farm truck and has not seen a road in a while.

I will be towing it to RHT on Feb 1, that should be a sight! Tow in a rig to have a $1800 give or take service done to it...but the last time gas was put in the vehicle some started pouring out on the ground, so I do not want to take a chance I end up driving a flaming fj60 chariot...

I plan to spray the strap bolts etc to make sure it comes off without much trouble, I have alreay removed the tire carrier for them.

I sure would like to replace the tank in my '87 60. I know it is leaking somewhere as the fuel level is dropping faster than usual. The problem with taking it to a dealer is there are many engine modifications. I do not know what games the dealer service department will play with the engine to force me to spend money repairing what was working fine . It is very hard for me to trust them since the last time I talked with their service departmet about this recall they claimed it was not a necessary fix.

How should I handle the engine mods- no cat converter, no air injection system, no pump, after market air cleaner assembly. All I need is for them to start messing around with hoses to make this engine not run right. Then I get to pay them to make it good again. Am I being overly suspicious?

I'm in the same boat. My tank is leaking a bit and having a new, free one would be great.

I gotta make a phone call.

to me it does not sound like those mods have ANYTHING to do with a tank replacement, I would take pictures of the engine compartment, they should really not have to touch the engine compartment other than to remove the battery.... I would talk to the service managers assistant and tell him your concerns in a nice way.

I do not see where a recall has anything to do with modifications even if you did something to the tank, they still have to replace it with a new model.

My/This truck is pretty rough, but there is nothing in the documentation of the recall that says I have to bring in a garage princess or have it un modded, on stock springs, etc,, if in the case of the tie rod ends I could see them denying a replacement if you had tweeked the driveline/tires etc, but I would think really for insurance they have to at least give you the parts, so they can check your vehicle off the list.

I would not worry about your modifications in the slightest bit.

The recall is FEDERAL. They HAVE to do it regardless of what is done to the truck. I can only see them turning down the recall if maybe the gas tank was modified in some way which I highly doubt anyone has done (unless for extreme trips).

Its been 2 weeks now since I picked up my rig and well..there are days when i'm driving down the road and I think to myself "300 bucks to replace something that was working fine after 20 years. Kind of like driving on the highway, opening the window and throwing $300 bucks out" lol.

But...I got it done. I recently took the truck to an exhaust shop to fix a broken hanger. While the rig was on the lift, I took a peek at the tank and they changed all the hoses, the fittings, clamps, the hose from the filler to the tank. About the best/shiniest looking thing on my rusty, old, dirty rig is the tank. LOL.

I went today to the local Toyota dealership to check on my truck to see if it had the recall done. It took them 15 minutes to find my VIN in the system, it kept saying "not a valid VIN". Turns out that both the seat belt and tank have not been done. Looking forward to the new stuff. I will have to check and see if they charge for unexpected things and what it is not covered under the recall that might need to be performed. Oh my and i just know there is gonna be a P an A that is gonna be a mile long.

Note:

Remove spare tire before taking it in. Or at least make sure the mechanism isn't rusted to the point where you'll get a call from the dealer telling you they cant remove the spare tire, need to break the mechanism to drop it, and try to charge you for the replacement....

Not that it happened to me or anything....

Good Luck.

Good point. I even thought about bringing my own gas cause they don't have any gas on the property as of now. Also i don't know if it makes a difference but i don't want gas that was in a 27 year old tank.

No matter what they have to do to fix the gas tank and belts, they are required to do it all free of charge. It is a federal mandate, and they cannot make you pay for anything. My tank and belts are on order as of last wednesday!

I bet TOA is wondering what has caused the sudden increased interest in the fuel tank recall. The internet can be a love/hate thing, and right now Toyota is questioning its remaining supply of new FJ60/62 fuel tanks needed for a federally mandated recall.

If only I waited a few more weeks to do mine...

I'm sure I could have gotten a rental out of them. Maybe a Pruis....

Just got off the phone. Took them forever to find the records, but it did come up. My tank was done in 1992 but my seat belt retractors have yet to be done.

brought mine in to the dealer today. should have seen the looks on there faces when i pulled it into they're fancy service bay. Funny scene, I'm hoping it solves some of my intermittent fuel flow problems. I'm happy to be getting a new tank for free thats a nice thing.

talking about tank recalls, i just had mine done on the 29th and i was wondering if i can compare invoices with some one who also had it done? cause i just have two parts listed on mine as being done on the tank and no sticker by the brake booster. that i have is

(tank sub-assy,) 1
(clip, hose) 1

thats it.
sorry if i am hi jacking....sorry.
