Wish Me luck: Dropped Off Truck For Gas Tank Recall

While I would expect toyota to eat the cost of minor "nuts and bolts" type stuff on a recall ... If the parts that break are not part of the recall, then it's reasonable to expect to be charged for that. 20 yrs later...adn during the course of the fuel tank recall some minor bracket or something is rusted bad and they say it need replacing.... not a big deal. If its that big a deal go down to the dealer and ask them to show you what they are talking about.

You can't remove old hoses and clamps and some nuts and bolts that old without issues along the way. Espically in the rust belt.

Recalls generally deal with a spcecific part (gas tank) and potnentially the brackets or mounts involved. You'll pay a 150% markup on nuts and bolt and minor misc parts..., that's the fun part of having a dealership do the work. If the parts not broken then and rusted, then one would assume you would need zero extra parts, but I doubt the fuel tank comes off the truck after 20+ years without some minor things breaking or getting cut.

My sentiments exactly.

I'll go there tomorrow, take a look at the invoice with the parts on it, make sure they're not on the official recall parts list and pay them if they're not.

Apparently if the recall (either one) was performed on your rig, Toyota should have put an SSC completion decal somewhere to indicate completion. Has anyone seen this? I'm having trouble getting Toyota to recognize my VIN so I figured I might just find some indication that the work was done already.

I appreciate everyone's input.

The parts I am being charged for, are not parts that are included in the recall.

I have not received a phone call today, which is a good thing lol.

So does anyone know for sure if I'm supposed to be paying these parts that are not in the recall parts list and they have to be replaced because they would not be able to re-install the original ones ?

Maybe I should give TOA another call ?

I feel like you are ignoring my replies... lol

I never found a decal on my rig, unless it's on top of the fuel tank.;)

lol. believe me i'm not.

I sometimes tend to have what i'd call a short temper, but don't like to make an a55 out of myself if it can be avoided lol.

I am getting ready to head out to pick the truck up.

Will update when I return...

Good Luck.

Here is the way that I see it. First of all I don't want anything going back on my truck that may be compromised in some way, rusty bracket, nearly stripped bolts, etc. Also I don't want anything for free that the dealer is not going to be reimbursed.
Certainly after they have gone to significant trouble to gather the parts from all over the country. If it is not on the list I would pay for them plain and simple.

cant assume...my vehicle had the recall done Summer 2009....25 years after she was built. I was not charged a penny for anything...including tank straps nor bolts nor anything else. They did say the spare tire was a pain in the ass to remove...but still....I was not charged anything. By the numbers of persons that have vehicles that were not modified....it comes down to each dealership not properly notifying customers as directed to ensure they were completed per the original recall. Email was not as common...not at all really...but people did not move around as much either. My aunt had vehicle in same area for 9 years after she bought it. :)

i think it says where it is to be placed in the recall but dont have time to read through it again...i want to say on firewall.

Per the recall...

Special Service Campaign Notice- SSC M01

"Any Toyota dealer will replace the fuel tank with an improved one at no cost to you.

If you believe that your dealer or Toyota has failed or is unable to remedy the defect within a reasonable time, you may submit a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Washington DC 20590 or call the toll free Auto Safety Hotline at 800-424-9393.

After completing the repair and before returning vehicle to the customer an SSC completion label that is enclosed in the owners letter must be affixed to the firewall (next to the brake booster). Make sure that the surface is clean and dry to ensure proper adhesion of the label.

Additional SSC lables (PN 00410-01917) may be ordered through the non-parts system on a 1450 order form or through the TDN system.

mine is May 1984 and both dealerships I talked to had no problem finding mine...Gene Reed in Charleston and SPARKS TRD in Myrtle Beach....actually Sparks is one that told me about it.

give sparks trd toyota a call if they cannot find it....as they had no issue finding mine.

ask for Jamie

I wonder if these recalls apply to the diesel version the bj60 of canada?

Nope, apparently the tanks are the same but I guess leaking diesel isn't the imminent threat to life that they see gasoline being:rolleyes:.

Oh...sorry, forgot about that.

I ended up just paying out. It came out to $297. I looked over the invoice and they charged me for 4 things.

A bracket, a nut, a screw, and a "gauge" which I think is the fuel sender...which appears to be causing an issue as described in my new thread referenced above. DAMN YOU TOYOTA!

Sweet, the toyota customer service line can't find my vin, they say their system cuts off at 86.5, mine being a May 1986.

I am having the same problem, they claim my vin on my title must be wrong,,,, I have a picture of the vin on the vehicle going to them...

This cruiser is a 1981.

I bought this cruiser bc the guy selling it had the motor rebuilt, on his way home he stopped to fill up the tank with gas and it started pouring out on the ground... so I figure either the guys at the shop did something to it or the gas tank finally gave up the ghost. I hope to have this resolved on Monday, I am going to keep 'politely' pestering them about this.

I have already gotten this-her 'we cannot find the VIN in our system.............silence..................'

me 'so now what?'...............silence.......murmmer as she talkes to someone else.................silence...........

me 'hello??'......

her 'um,,, you must have the wrong number look it up on the vehicle and call us back....':bang:

her ' let me enter this number in while my manager is here.........yep the computer says 'no record found'

her 'double check the vin on the vehicle and call us back'

now driving my cruiser to the dealer is going to be another story...I wonder if I can trailer it to the dealer?? I have not read anywhere the vehicle has to be driveable... though it would make sense...maybe I can trailer it to the best buy next door and drive it across the parking lot....:hillbilly:

contact t o a they can find the vin in there stored files ,, my rig is do for the tank recall, but the dealer cant locate the parts for the recall, i am going to contact toyota of america and see if they cant put a little lead in there assssss
