My 71 has an inside motor mounted on upper windshield frame on passenger side. The driver side (cable) works but the passenger side(motor) doesn't work.Pulled it apart and both gears for the passenger side seem fine(no broken teeth). There's a nut that spins between this gear and the casing cover. Not sure whether this nut needs to be tighten against the gear or the casing cover.Occasionally, I can get the pass side wiper splined bolt to rotate while off the frame but as soon as I mount it it doesn't move.
Kind of hard to explain.
Maybe someone has dealt with these motors.
I know this style motor is no longer available and have to rely on used ones.

Thanx

Thanks for the pic. However, I can't decipher which part Im refering to.
Im sitting in pass seat.Remove 2 bolts and the motor is loose.Flip it over and remove 5 small phillips screws.Motor assembly detaches in my left hand and what is in my other hand is a cover(frame side). This cover retains a shaft that has a large gear on the inside that mates to a gear off the motor. There's a nut that threads between this large gear and this cover. This nut can either be tightened toward the gear or toward the cover.
Like I said, it's hard to explain in words.
Just hoping someone gets it.

Okay, in the pic schematic look at part 85014- shaft. If you look at the casing, you'll see a gear in the upper left, just under the gasket or packing.Between that gear and case there was a nut that was loose.Tried tightening toward case and gear but nothing seemed to work.Occasionally, I got the shaft to work so I guess I 'll be fiddling
I seem to be missing alot of those little pieces shown
I might need part 85168
Im also thinking that the gear needs to be either moved in or out to mate up better with the motor gear.
Just rambling....

i have this same issue, but reverse. 1971 FJ40, My pass side wiper seems to work. The driver side, motor makes noise, and the wiper arm occasionally twitches or moves a bit, but in general does not work. I'm in sunny CA, so I've been procrastinating taking this apart. Did you guys figure out the problem? Curious..

I posted a follow up but I guess it was lost in the reboot.

My passenger side did not work. The inner shaft that drives the arm is connected to a gear inside the casing. If you take the inner cover off-5 scews(after disconnecting the outside nuts and removing the wiper arms) the shaft assembly will come out.

While holding the larger outer shaft, try turning the large gear. The splined inner shaft(that connects to the wiper arm) should rotate. If it does rotate then do this. Hold the inner splined shaft and try to turn the large gear. If the the large gear turns while holding the inner shaft then it is slipping.
Looking at the gear, you will see where the inner shaft "connects" with the gear.I guess it's a pressed fit.

I had someone weld right where the inner shaft meets the gear.I had to grind the weld flush with the gear to clear the casing.
Its important to make sure the gear isn't slipping when subjected to a bit of resistance since the wiper blades will create some on their own
I can take a pic if needed
