Hi all,

I didn't want to hijack this very nice thread, but it did make me wonder where I would find the gasket and perhaps even the interior parts for my 1962 FJ40.

My gasket is torn up, there is no screen and the opening mechanism is missing so the PO wired it shut.

Thanks!

As far as the gasket goes, first thing to do is determine if you have a bolt together or spot welded windshield vent. A repro bolt together gasket is available from SOR. I did a thread on the spot welded vent here. You can hand cut the gasket or cut it from the repro.

I believe the crank, screen and hardware are the same for all the vented windshields (just to help you in your used parts search).

I have screens and maybe the opening mechanism for you (except no knob) off of a donor I have. Send me pics of what you have, I will see if I can fill in the rest.

I got a gasket for mine from Specter.

I got a windshield from a late 62. This one is still spot welded together (early style) I have one for a 64 that bolts together. What a 63 has not sure.

I'll check later today to see if it is bolted or spot welded.

Any guidance for a not-so-bodyshop-inclined-rookie on removing the vent flap etc?

the couple I have removed (bolt together types), the little nuts often were rusted on. so soak them with penetrating oil the night before, so that you dont actually twist the welded on bolt right in half (not the best metal in these). but it is pretty straight forward ont eh bolt together ones, remove the tiny nuts (7mm if I remember) and then push it apart. Odds are it has glued itself to the gasket pretty well over hte years, so you might have to run a small screwdriver under the lip to free it. Just dont pry ont he metal.

Let me add. Once I got the first nut off I used it on the other bolts to clean the threads. I've also found somethings it works better to tighten the nut just a little bit first. This will break the bond at the outside of the nut at the threads. Other side of the nut is betterth protected and less likely to be rusted. This might help with the strip above vent door. My guess is you have the spot welded type.

something that has worked very well for me with rusted hardware is HEAT. with smaller nuts and bolts a simple hand torch with mapp gas works well. Large stuff may require oxy acetylene . good luck

Just don't want to use too much heat and cook the old dried out gasket behind.

Thanks for all of that. How do I remove the entire thing from the vehicle? What is it attached to?

Here is a picture I took at noon. What can you all tell from this? Are the small nuts the ones that I remove to take it off or is this the bolt on type?

remove the nuts (which are attahed to that top bar of the vent when viewed fromt eh outside of the window). That will allow you to pull the whole thing out. I cant tell fromt he picture if the bottom part is bolted or welded. I dont see any nuts in the picture, so I woudl guess welded. I have a bolt together one if you want it.

I was going to send the braket and screw wihh the screens, but I see you have it already. You are however missing hte part that goes from the screw to the slotted bracket on the vent. I have that for you, but will hav eot pull it tonight, so I am afraid your package of goodies wont go out until tomorrow. and if you want hte whole vent thing, maybe even longer as I have to find a longer box.

Thanks again. I would love a picture of how it all looks together since I don't have a better reference than what SOR puts on their site. I think I'll be ordering the gasket from them and following the article from Living in the Past for the spot welds.

The tread is from Cruiser_Nerd. I'm trying to find the later style don't I can just use the gasket as is

Here it is removed. I guess it must be spot welded caz there are no nuts or bolts and I see those dimples running down the center. It actually looks like it could have been crimped along the top.

Anyway, I'll see about getting it apart now that it is off. Any tricks for that? I read the post above but it goes from together to apart in one click. Oh I wish it was that easy.

Wrong Knob

So I have everything here. Thanks to all for that. Now I see that my knob is actually not correct in that it will not connect to the screw. Are there any out there or should I go back to SOR for more shipping charges?

Your correct knob is shown in post #10 of this thread. Looks like someone attached it to the high/low shifter. Looks like you are missing some parts of the flap knob assy. John P#3

Now there's a good eye.

WOW! When I get home I'll be checking that out. Perhaps I can switch the knobs. I always noticed that my high/low shifter had a knob but no one else's did...

Just a question....I don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but

I have a 64 with a similar windshield vent. After putting all the pieces back together it appears that I am missing the, for lack of a better word, backing plate pictured above. I have have the regulator, rubber flap, front, and "rubber gasket retainer" (skinny piece pictured as well). Does anyone have any idea if that part is available or does anyone have one to sell?
