I need to replace the windshield in my '87 FJ60. The grommet/boot/gasket that holds it in currently has a stainless trim insert (the same as all the other non-operable windows). If I get the windshield replaced, does the boot usually get replaced at the same time? Will the replacement boot have provisions for installing the trim piece or is it likely that the new one simply won't have the trim in it? The glass places I've called cannot answer my questions.

On my 87 when I had the window replaced, I had the option of black trim or with the Chrome trim in the gasket. I would make sure to replace the gasket.

The rubber Toyota used is of amazing quality, I have been able to reuse the weather striping on the 4 that I have done.

Just spray it down with silicone for a few days and it will be better than new.

The aftermarket windshield trim that I have seem did not fit that well and did not have the chrome. (that is just the few that I have seen)

There are 2 gaskets - 1 for the "chrome" & 1 without. I used to tell people I couldn't get the 1st kind. I just couldn't force myself to order one.

I just had my 62 done and after screwing with it for hours the glass guy listened to me. He had already broken one windshield. He did manage to reuse the factory rubber but I had him pull the chrome and discard it. Glue the molding to the windshield and then glue the assembly in the truck. It is not the reccomended way to do it but it is a guaranteed leak free solid seal. I can put new chrome in if I wish later but I have so much more to do before that. I'm not real concerned with chrome.

This is very good info for those who don't know why the chrome is there. I however am quite well versed in the matter and have overcome the issue quite well. I'd test my seal in a windtunnel or pressurize the cabin with a smoke tester to prove it if needed (as if my rust holes won't leak LOL) but my windshield is GTG. However, your facts stand true to those less in the know so thank you for your post, I should have qualified my statement better.

It's called a lock strip in the biz, & they're a pain in the ass. The gasket that takes it is a WCR F425.

The black gasket (WBL F425) has one built in. It's easy to use.

Agreed completely.

WBL has the self-locking strip. WCR takes the "chrome". Install the gasket around the windshield, rope it in, & install the "chrome" (requires special insert tool).

If using the WBL, install the gasket around the windshield, unzip the lock strip, rope it in, & zip the lock strip with a hook tool or "bone" stick.

Silicone spray lubricant makes everything happier.

Nice to have you Tinker, wish you installed glass in the great state of WI. Obviously you know what you are doing. UNLIKE the dudes that did mine.

I went to school in Mwaukee. One of my old (like I'm not) fraternity brothers is sales manager for one of the big glass companies there - can't think of the name. Post or PM me the details of your disappointments & I'll hook you up.

I'm not that disappointed. I got what I paid for. It just took two shields and 5 days with out my cruiser. A good deal turned out to be not what I expected. NO worries.

What probably happened is the installer had little experience in "old tech". I've watched it many times. We had to replace the windshield in a GT350 that a younger installer of mine put in but didn't get the screws at the bottom right.

Having said that, the 60 windshield is pretty easy. Its the "chrome" that's a PITA.

is it "SOP" to use urethane under the gasket on the pinch weld? I tried to change one on my 84 and the gasket was glued in..it had the lockstrip too,

The gasket is pretty high quality, so there's a pretty good chance you can reuse it. If not, you can get a new one with or without a channel for the chrome trim. I opted to go without the chrome, because I like the "de-blinged" look. If the glass guys know what they're doing, they'll attach the gasket to the glass first, then install the assembly to the truck (after putting corrosion protectant over any rust or bare metal spots that the gasket would cover). The guys who did mine did, and did a really good job (even ordered PPG glass before I had specified that that's what I wanted).
