Mine was done through a friend who also did the body work but he was not interested in doing any more cruisers, was a favor.

As for a good glass installer Matt at Diamond auto glass is the guy to call in the Denver area.

@Ali FJ80, Didn't you also have a body shop (not your friend) on the west side of town you liked?

Just wanted to post this for any and all Denver area friends who might search the forum down the road...

I HIGHLY recommend using Premium Auto Glass for windshield replacements, and they have a handful of locations around the metro area (Westminster, Centennial, Littleton, etc). I am still working with them to have another replacement windshield installed, but literally every Premium Auto Glass employee I have spoken with over the last two weeks was well-aware of the notoriety of our 100 series windshields and their related rust/leak problems. I spoke over the phone with an employee from one location who knew of the issue, the techs and the manager of another location all knew of the issues, and when I called a third location to finally have the work done even the receptionist responded with, "Oh boy, yup, those are notorious for issues" when I told her I had a 2000 LC.

As I have yet to actually have the work performed, I can't comment on the quality of work, warranty, etc. However; I am beyond comfortable leaving my vehicle with these guys at any one of their shops, not only due to their wealth of UZJ100 specific knowledge, but their top-notch customer service and transparency as well.

Premium Auto Glass - We Install Confidence

I just went through this on my 98 100 LC. The carpets were soaking wet and I read about adding some sealer to the bottom of the windshield. I didn't want to get into it so I had insatller come look at it. He told me it poorly installed and needed to be pulled and replaced. I let him do it and he sent me pics of the rust , etc. as in this thread. I own the car since new. The windshiled had never been replaced. This is an OEM problem.

I don't know about his statement "poor install". But I've been hearing it's a design issue, from a number of sources.

Great to see someone post that can verify form day one it's a virgin windshield, thank you. I'd like see others outside of rust belt confirm.

I heard something about Toyota settle a class action for rust, 2005 and up, may be this needs to be broadened.

That's not that bad. Mine has about the same amount of rust. I bet 2 mins with a wire grinding wheel and it will be shiny bright and ready for primer and paint.

I am going to a body shop this weekend because of this issue, I have a couple of stone chips that have bubbled up the surrounding paintwork at the top of the screen. The screen looks like it has been changed and the side mouldings just screwed back on, the screws do look like they have sealant on them at least to not cause leaks, but I would like to get it treated and installed properly. I am taking it to a car restoration specialist as they should know how to deal with the rust and do a good job, but I do expect them to be pricey. Also going to get new fenders put on and get the bonnet painted the same time. These are the last of the jobs I have left to bring the truck back up to scratch, the uk weather is hard on ageing vehicles so have spent many hours this year doing it myself, but this is a job for the professionals I think.

Nasty, I hope to find much less rust than that.

My plan is one others here have used; Have mobile service tech pull the windshield, then de-rusting myself, having tech come back later to install. I'll also be on a body shop schedule, in event I find perforation.

The mobile installer did whatever rust repair and the new windshield probably not the ultimate in repair but he was confidant in what he was doing.

He did call it that way before getting into it.

Wow, quote for me was £2000 and that is pounds and I already have the fenders. So the job is to fit and paint new fenders, paint the bonnet, remove the windscreen and repair and refit. New color paint will be blended to the sunroof from the windscreen and all the roof will be clear coated. Sides will be color coated and blended at rear passenger doors, all of doors will then be clear coated. I asked for one extra coat of 2k clear to be applied. Seems expensive but alot of area is being covered.

Wanted to add to this. I have a rust free 01 from SW Texas all is life , I noticed a small bubble or two of rust at the top of the windshield , knowing there was a problem and after reading here I took it to a buddy that runs a body shop, he had a good glass guy pull the windshield , of which I had a receipt of the PO replacing a couple years ago, he found enough rust that would have been a issue if left un handled for a minimal amount he was able to grind it out , treat it and seal, primer and paint it ,it could have been WAY worse if not handled. But the glass guy did say it was a poor install by the previous installer . So glad to have read this thread to spook me into getting it into the shop

Has anyone had any luck using the dealer to replace the windshield? It would seem like they should know what they are doing but maybe they just sub it to a windshield company?

I have had a spot above the windshield for years. I tried to grind it back to avoid it growing, but it’s back to rusting again. I have now noticed two more rock chipped areas that are starting to bubble. So it’s time to get this looked at by a pro. Where there other suggestions for body shops in the Denver area. I saw SVE and APEX listed. We are in the Wash Park area and it would be great to find a shop that is close by the house.

Has anyone applied bed liner to the area between the windshield and sunroof? I was thinking that might protect the area from further rock chips, etc.

I really can't recommend a particular body shop. It's all about the shop foreman on any given day. Is he a "get done and out" or "get it done right". I know of one shop (don't recall the name) in downtown Littleton, the only one there. They're very pricy and are known for doing top jobs and will not take shortcuts (or so they say).

A body shops told me they like POR-15 under windshield. I've not used bed liner or looked into, but it may be for use on an already coated surface. POR-15 is for bare or rusted surface an it incases. Personal I don't like incasing, but found the POR-15 if tuff stuff and will not release from a porous surface.

It's a DIY job (but a real mess PITA job) if no perforation.
