Could anyone tell me if this winch has free spooling?

The listing doesn't say, but I do see some sortof lever

It appears to me that it does. Looks like there is a "T" handle on right side next to the red band (lettering not clear, crappy pic.).

More winches than not, these days... have a free spooling feature, so I'd be surprised if it didn't.

I’d be more worried about the loss of “performance”….than the use of amperage.

Something most folks are not aware of when considering a “bargain” winch…is the price you pay in performance loss.

I have put together some specs. to illustrate what I mean.

The first column shows the layer/pull rate. To the side of that, I have shown the drop in performance based on the layer preceding it. Then last, a “total” of performance loss for all 5 layers (from maximum rated pull).

Note how well the 8274 does with 150’ of cable!

Warn XD9….100’ of 5/16” cable. Never pulls less than 6570 lbs!

1/9000 lbs. Drop 0
2/8190 lbs. Drop 810
3/7500 lbs. Drop 690
4/7010 lbs. Drop 490
5/6570 lbs. Drop 440………..total drop (5 layers) from rated pull: 2430 lbs.

Warn 8274….150’ of 5/16” cable. Never pulls less than 6290 lbs!

1/8000 lbs. Drop 0
2/7460 lbs. Drop 540
3/6980 lbs. Drop 480
4/6620 lbs. Drop 360
5/6290 lbs. Drop 330…………total drop (5 layers) from rated pull: 1710 lbs.

Harbor freight….100’ of 3/8” cable. Drops to 5180 lbs. pull on last layer.

1/10000 lbs. Drop 0
2/8110 lbs. Drop 1890
3/6830 lbs. Drop 1280
4/5890 lbs. Drop 940
5/5180 lbs. Drop 710……….total drop (5 layers) from rated pull: 4820 lbs. (Wow!)

Everyone has a different need when it comes to winches. That’s why there are so many different models. Folks have different budgets, that is understood as well.

Choose wisely.

Hi All:

Note, when he says "total drop - five layers" he means that the winch has its full pull potential with almost all its cable off the drum. So, for short distance pulls use a snatch block to at least get more able off the drum for more pulling power.

The Warn M8274 is *the* winch for 'wheeling where I live - and I don't own one! But, have pulled a lot of cable on them for other rigs. Strong, fast, powerful winch with a long cable - what more could one ask for? :D

Regards,

Alan

Wow

Thanx for the info

Happen to have comparison numbers for a Warn 8k?

I don't plan on winching my 80 up a tree or anything like that, just want sumthin to help me get out of the mud ;) (on a budget of course)

Don't mind having to use a snatch block or two, but my main concern is actually fitting it behind the stock bumper

BTW, any thoughts on Tabor winches

Found a refurbed 12k for $130 more than the HF unit and it's roughly the same size....

Just go to their web site and compare specs.

I looked for specs. on the Tabor but they didn't list them (must not have been too impressive).

The HF winch (in terms of pulling power) would be fine on the two layers nearest the drum, its just after that it begins to peter out pretty quickly. Don't know how long it would last either.

Everyone has different needs in a winch, so I am not condemning or recommending any particular one. Just saying, do some research before buying so that you get one that suits your needs.
