Winch - Front or Rear?

Yep.... of course we could also do that with a stand along donkey, built a little smaller and hauled by hand (4-6 guys) or dragging up under it's own power. But if I mount it in the mini, then we could just drag the min up with the donkey in the back and then pull the others up. And of course no offloading at the top or reloading to head over to the downhill side and winch everyone down.

And it lets me use a larger motor/winch system since it does not have to be moved around by hand.

The mini can't be "over the top of the hill" for the specific run that has me thinking about this. Once you are on top of the ridge it is at least a couple of miles to the down hill side. But we can anchor the mini on the flat-ish area up top. But in some situations it could be. And it is simple to carry a framework to suspend a pulley so it does not drag on the crest of a hill, or to get an upward pull on a mire rig in different circumstances.

If I do pursue this, it allows me to use a larger winch drum than I can run o the front of a rig (or under/on the back). Right now I have a 10000 pound rated Braden that I can probably fit 700 feet of 5/16 on. Looking at it I think I can do/have a bit of fab work done and as much as double that.
Round up a motorcycle/atv engine to power it.... Buy hydro pump and motor and see where it goes. :)

Mount it all in a slide in cradle in the back of the ruck so it can be removed to use the truck for other purposes still. With a 350, 488s, lockers and 36 inch Swampers it is too much fun to only use as a winch rig. :)

I can also see this coming in handy as a recovery rig... even if it is a bit small and light.

Lots of pondering to do... and even more work if I am gonna try to have to done by July. I kinda expect we will be depending on the PTO winches that we have on a couple of the rigs to get us up and over this time.

Get a sailboat engine. Mount it crosswise in the bed. Many are diesel. They are rated to run continuously highly tilted to either side.

ATVs around here are as common as rocks. Sailboats are a bit less common. ;)

I was thinking about the angle considerations. I figure a mount that can swing in the longitudinal axis of the truck should solve this concern.

And since all of our rigs are gassers, there is no real advantage to a diesel motor for the winch. ;)

As I'm sure you already know, Mark, make sure you KISS :)

It might be worth pricing and looking around for a gasser boat motor, rather than build in an innately weaker and more failure prone system to compensate for the use on a high angle.

But like you said, not many people are into sailing the Bering sea.... not sure why!

Not sure that it will be weaker. The gas motor will be used to power a hyro pump. no mechanical attachment to the hydro motor or winch. a pivot for the engine cradle is a straight forward affair.

While it may be that I wind up with an outboard boat motor (river boats are a lot more common here than sail boats. ;) ) at this point the choice of motor is down the road a little bit. What I can come up with for a reasonable price is gonna be a big factor. :)

I've been running a two winch setp for years on different trucks, the longest time running was a Suburban I used to own. My current setup is a Warn 9000 in the front and a Ramsey 5000 reciever hitch winch in the rear. I've never been in a situation where it didn't free me or whoever I was pulling. I would throw a snatch block on that 5000lb winch and pull. It does real nice.

When not in use, I keep it in a Pelican case in the cargo area.

Another thing..... Reciever winches arn't that expensive and they work just fine.

I already have a winch in the front and I plan to have one inside the rear bumper once I purchase it. I am also continuing to carry my come-along. By doing so, I can winch from the front, rear or side depending on the predicament in which I find myself. I can use the come-along in those situations where I have buried the vehicle over the axles and getting to the winches is a hassle due to mud or other debris.
