Well the next thing that im doing to my rig is getting a winch, aside from getting my sides linexed which will hopefully be soon. So I was getting conflicting ideas from people on batteries and what to get. Some said keep the stock battery and some said go with optima yellow top and some said it doesn't really make a difference. What do I need to properly run a 10,000 pound warn winch?

You may have to go to a warn 12000 because I don't think the 10000 is still available.

just get a 2000pound one and dont get stuck :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

Just keep the engine running if you'd like to stay stock. If you like the ability to run the winch with the engine off, put in dual yellow tops or use the yellow top as the aux and keep the stock. Get a 200 AMP solenoid from www.wranglernw.com, a battery manager (Switch) - also from wranglernw, a battery tray from SLEE or Cdan and some o guage cable cut to length. Go here for some instructions http://www.sleeoffroad.com/technical/tz_dual_batteries.htm

Wrangler NW has a slightly different and simpler setup - let me know if you'd like the wiring diagram.

Oh trust me I know you have to keep the engine running. I had a milemarker 12k pound on my tahoe and had to rev the engine soooo much in order to just keep it barely running when winching.

Many go with dual batteries, but it's not a requirement.
Stock will work, but if it's old and tired, you might consider a new one. I recently picked up an Optima Blue top and am happy with that one.

Warn 12k is what I plan on putting in when I get around to adding one...
 -- so many things to do...

Oh ok so they don't make the 10k anymore? Cause the 9k seems just ok and the 12k seems a little overboard. I guess I will just have to decide. Isn't the blue top meant for boats? Cause I was thinking about getting just one yellow top when i get my winch because my old battery is crap. But the bluetop might be more weather resistant. Any suggestions?

I like putting boat stuff in my cruiser.
Find some info about winches, winch selection logic, etc. Remember the cruiser weighs around 6,000 lbs. Search, read, learn.

I did search that and it gave me to much useless threads to read through. But thanks.

Ever heard of Google? I searched on "winch size selection 4x4"
and found this link:
http://www.4x4now.com/bb0197.htm

I haven't read it all...just scanned it to see if it had info rather than just being an ad for something...so it could be BS...it could be spot on.

Stop being mentally lazy.

Thanks norcal that is a good site. I was just searching around on the forum and didn't find anything that was all that informative but that site did it.

Ever heard of Google = probably not

Mentally Lazy = Hampden Sydney :princess:

Technical Links available on IH8MUD.COM very available. :flipoff2:

Stucky,

Plan A:
=====
1. Buy a Warn M12000
2. Buy a Hellroaring isolator (or wait for Mobi's vaporware equivalent  )
3. Buy an Optima yellow top
4. Take everything to David and ask him to make it work.
5. Enjoy and be confident that if you have a problem on the trail you will have no clue on how to get yourself running again.

Plan B:
=====
1. Research winches. Choose a brand and size appropriate to your vehicle.
2. Research batteries. Choose a brand and size appropriate to the way you plan to build your truck; now and in the future.
3. Research dual battery systems (there's a couple of on-going threads in Outfitting) then choose a system that is appropriate to the way you plan to build your truck; now and in the future.
4. Design your dual battery/winch system with the help of someone that you are going to pay to install it. (there's nothing wrong with paying a pro to do it right.)
5. Enjoy and be confident that if you have a problem on the trail *you* will know how the system is designed and built and you will be able to get yourself running again.

It's your choice.

12k is not overkill. Err on the side of caution. Typical formula is 1.5X the heaviest laden vehicle weight. ~7500 or so X 1.5= 11250. Pretty close to 12,000. When in doubt, go large. That, and do what Beowulf says, or Grendel will get you!

You don't like the Hellroaring set up? I've read good stuff from posts.Even one of Junk's friends, Go figuer.
It's just that you put it in the plan A no clue collum?

Do what the "Wulf" said.

Sparky,

Only you can determine what your expected needs are. I don't know how or where you "wheel" or what your worst case scenario might be....but do purchase ENOUGH winch for your vehicle.

My recommedation is (12,000 lb. Warn or Ramsey). You will need a battery of at LEAST 650 cca. (more is better) and dual is better still.

Please pay attention to the following: A "proper" installation is the key to good winch performance!

If you have a weak battery, poor connections, small cables, weak alternator, etc... then, your new winch will labor (if work at all) when it is needed.

Ideally, you want to have a large winch "work easily" rather than "work the piss" out of a smaller one.

Remember, the 12,000 lb. rating is for the 1st layer of cable...(in other words you have it nearly all spooled out), the other layers are as follows:

2nd layer.....11,170 lbs.
3rd layer.....10,340 lbs.
4th layer.....9,770 lbs.
5th layer.....9,250 lbs.

Entire books have been written on the subject of self recovery and some discussion of it has been posted here in the past. Do educate yourself...because it is all too possible to seriously injure yourself or others.

If you know "when to stop"....then most of your winching will not require the full power of the unit to get you unstuck. Having said that.....I have stuck myself so badly that MY winch and ANOTHER were not enough to extract my Early Bronco from a creek bed.

Decide for yourself, educate yourself (as wulf suggested), and be able to extract yourself.

Good luck with your project.

Plan A is the "I don't want to think" column. All of the advice and products are good choices though not the *only* choice. (Slight dig at Mobi for pre-announcing a product that, 9 months later, is still not available.)

Plan B is the "I will understand what is going on" column. Same products should be candidates for his install, but Sparky needs to read and I'm not sure he knows how.

Thought you had old sparky in the twit filter.

How did you even see this thread.

You see all threads, just not his posts.... until someone quotes him as in post #13 above. You can selectively view individual posts from those on your ignore list. That's how I saw yours. :D
