Will an 80 fit through the Pinion Mtn. squeeze?

I am thinking about going through this area in October. Has anyone taken thier 80 through this obstacle? Pinion Mtn Rd starts on the S2 just south of Scissors Crossing (78/S2). It goes through the squeeze and down pinion dropoff. It is mainly for narrow vehicles like the heeps and FJs. I am not interested in banging my rig all up. If I dont fit, I'll come around from Fish Creek Wash / Sandstone Canyon area and check out the other side. Has anyone ever gone up the dropoff?

Pictures?

Thanks

It should, i've made it through with my XJ which wasn't too much smaller in width. You'll have to fold back your mirrors and bring people along to push your rig away from the side of the boulders. It will be extemely tight. The stocker you are the better. Don't go do it and expect no damage. I would go knowing full well that there is a good chance i could hit a window, door or quarter panel. If you don't like hearing that, then don't even go.

If you can get a wide FJ Cruiser through it your fine.

The second section you called pinion drop off is Heart Attack hill and that scares me way more than the squeeze ever will. It's not SWB friendly! This pic doesn't do it justice.

The widest vehicle I have personally seen go through was an 05 Tacoma...it did get a little scratch on the passenger door. In my opinion the answer is no.

the taco..

Yes if it the same as it was about yr half ago…80, 60, and a 100 all made it through /wo a scratch even with the flares. The hill was no biggie, longer wheel base helps

cool...I stand corrected. Must have picked a perfect line through the squeeze.

I'm gonna have to call BS on the 100 w/flares and even the 80 w/flares until you post a pic.

Great, thanks for talking some sense into me.

I would almost attempt it if I could keep the vehicle level. From watching the video, it seems there are a couple of spots where the vehicle jerks to the left or right due to the uneven rock. My rig is still stock height, making a tough obstacle even worse.

So, what about going up heart attack hill. I found a video with some jeeps going up. Anyone went up it? Is is legal? Is it against tread lightly practice? (I know some areas in AB discourage going up steep downhills, e.g. the slot).

Regarding the 100 going through without a scratch... I'd like to see pics as well. I am sitting in a coffee shop writing this, and outside is an immaculate white 100. I cringe when I think of one of those going through.

Here is me going down it on my moto:

When i got to the bottom, i took a little break, cleaned my undies and went UP it!

Going down it was MUCH scarier, and the bike went UP it in seconds!

Good job on catching the steepness of that hill. Hard to do in a photo..

I MAY try it..

Reminder to self: Bring clean undies.

Ive been up and down the right handside. Here's a old video clip.. the XJ walked right up it. Just the last part that makes you nervous if you bobble. I thought i remember hearing it was only one way now? Down.

I shat myself just watching that.

Eric,

FWIW: I personally wouldn't try the squeeze. Not sure how wide an 80 is v. a Tundra, but I've seen pictures of a mangled Tundra that "made it through".

last year w/ dana went there to check it out, they measured and the math came up a few inches narrow. I think w/o flares, it would pinch thru w/ some lube (if "paint" and "lube" are interchangeble words in your world).

That was the verdict last I talked to a BLM chap out there. I forgot to ask if it was due to Tread Lightly concerns, safety concerns, or both. Probably the last.

It is one way in all the books and maps. Going up you will spin tires and make the trail worse.

Ya, I've seen that picture too. Thats why I turned around when I took my tundra out there.

I've already decided against going through the squeeze. Without convincing evidence that I can get through without body damage, I'm not going to do it.

I'll have to make the decision to go up the hill when the time comes. If I feel that it's going to tear up the hill, then I'm not going to do that either.

BTW: Reid, have you done your PHH yet? I'll be doing my this Saturday. :crybaby:

I installed some of that sound deading material, works well. Thanks for the 411.

Not yet. Steve gave me a section of silicon hose and I picked up the clamps. I just have to do it.

How much of the truck did you end up insulating?

Yeah, I have to do mine too but I am removing fenders and adding Durabak this weekend otherwise I would have joined ya. Plus I need to order starter contacts and a fuel filter so I can do those at the same time as the PHH.
