Question, I have a 72 FJ40 that has a hell of a whine/growl in the back end pumpkin. I've been debating taking it apart, I don't know yet if it's the bearings or ring and pinion or both. Although, after I bought it I changed all the fluids and rusty water came out of the back diff., not good :(.

Anyway, buddy has got a rear axle out of a 76, am I looking at any issues. I'm thinking, get it cheap and drop in a whole new rear axle? I would prefer to just bolt in, if I have to start modding it out, I think I would just fix what I got.

Thanks, Matt

Sometime in 74 the shock mount was moved from the axle housing to the U-bolt plate so just weld some on or use later plate. You could swap the whole carrier into your axle housing too. Flange is bigger so change flange.
