snow chains

Nay,

Snow chains would make that snow like driving on Moab slickrock. Why have I never seen a video of anyone snow wheeling with chains. I put 4 chains on my 80 and seem to never get stuck........maybe that is why no one uses them. Too easy.

A few reasons:

1) Way too much exposed rock on the trail;
2) They don't fit on 37s at my lift height;
3) The last thing you wanted to do is dig in these conditions - beadlocks and 2 PSI were much more effective compared to the chained rigs, although in spots like where I spin they would have helped for sure;
4) Going bare is much more fun :D

That first part of the video that I walk up had been a spot that only a FJ40 buggy on 40's had gotten through (the white 80 on 35" Toyos you see in front of me had to winch through).

We did have a few rigs on chains, but most not. Ground clearance and big rubber were far more effective and important than chains, plus again we had so much bare rock that chains would have sucked all day. I should have taken some vid on my rig buried to the frame with all four spinning gently in idle. 80's sink :D

You should join next year :cheers:

Nay what PSI did you drop the Trxus' down to?

Chains

Makes sense now why no chains. I guess I forget sometimes that the front range has a ton of rocks exposed all winter. I am up in Eagle, so I have nothing but deep snow (or a trip to Moab) to wheel in all winter. Chains are pretty much a given if you want to get anywhere and make it home for dinner.

I would be glad to join you guys on any good trips, and glad to show you some good snow running up here. Send me a PM if you have any trips comming up.

Urban pipe crawling!!!!!!!

I was running 10 PSI, lowest I generally go non-bead locked.

hmmmmm...... so that's not too low for a truxus?

I usually run mine at about 18. :popcorn:

18 is highway pressure for a Load Range E Interco tire :D.

At 10 I get a lot of flex now, I had set the Stauns for 12 but for some reason they are going lower.

New video here, Poison Spider Mesa, CM10. Steep ledge on a steep hill, the lightest bump in fourwheeling history :D

hey Nay did you connect and disconnect your front locker.. to save bit heat in your PS ..?

ie making a turn or after any obstacle .. ?

I disconnected everything down to the CDL for ease of steering reasons. Ran most of the trail in AWD low range.

You can't drive Moab with a front locker engaged anymore than you can drive payment with it engaged. Obstacles only as needed.

I run mine at 16 and they get plenty of flex. Of course my 80 is definitely not on a diet. Check out the rear left flex in this pic (on 16psi).

BTW, you made that little ledge look way to hard.;)

I was supposed to be on Spike, but we were late getting to Moab and had to get inspected Thu morning (Cruise Moab) and couldn't catch the group when I lost the trail in a snow squall.

When one is on Poison Spider after planning on a long day on Spike, you have to make the little things count rather than just taking a run at them :grinpimp:

My trxus flex fine at higher PSI now that I've beat them a bunch, 10 PSI is squishy now. I do like to spin all four once or twice when in Moab. I find it smoothes out the soft compound tread nicely :hillbilly:

I know the feeling well. We ran Spike last year in hail, rain, etc. Doesn't make much difference on the slickrock IMO.

Sorry we missed you (again) this year. BTW, the popup camper's furnace rocked the CM weather. Every night it was 65'F.:cool:
