Didn't someone add a few inches to a 40 axle a while back?? I have searched on here and pirate and can't find anything on it. I remember pics of the tube welded in and then sleeved. Anyone know who it is? or the thread I am referring to??

I remember reading about it on ppb....but I have not been able to locate the thread..

Good luck!

The original person (I can't remember who) deleted it. He received a lot of crap, you know the usual, why didn't you go with a d60 and such. So, he wussed out and deleted it. I personally think it was kind of cool. Some of us don't need d60, especially with longfield and 4340/300M inner axles. A little more width would be nice though. Maybe look into going with 80 series axles. They're ruffly 5" wider than the 60 series and of course even wider than the 40 series.

The original thread was deleted by the author of the thread asking the same question fj40john is asking, NOT me. I built the axle and run it in my Cruiser now but I was not the one that posted the thread or deleted it, I just replied in it :flipoff2:

Like I asked over on Pirate, could you give up a quick rundown on what was involved?

First I cut the housing with a pipe cutter like I was going to do a cut and turn. after I cut through the the housing I removed the ball end. I decided I needed to widen the short side by about 2" so I took a mini truck housing that I had and cut that ball end off about 2" in from the weld (aprox). I then had a machine shop make a sleeve that fit in the Cruiser housing and into the end of the truck housing end. I drilled 4-1/2" holes in both parts so I could plug weld it and weld the circ of the tube.

Thanks! :)

Rock hugger.....

Or am I losing my mind?

You are correct, that knuckle was only on there to set the caster/camber. I used the same knuckle for both side to get it set right. That is just a setup knuckle

Nice thinking outside the box. Wider axles are the right way to do it, rather that offset rims.

I agree that 80 series axles would be the ticket, but they're pricey. 60 series axles are wider that 40 series axles, but only on the long side. That opens up a whole bag of snakes if you want to keep you springs in the stock place.

What did you do for axleshafts? Two custom longer shafts?

Look forward to seeing it completed.

Cheers, Steve

I had Mark Williams build a custom length 300M inner for the short side. The long side I did not change, it uses a stock 60/mini longside shaft. It turned out awesome, I've been running it since last summer :D
