Hello. I'm new here, and I couldn't find an answer to my question, so hopefully you guys can help me out. I want to do a SAS on my '96 Tacoma. I'm very partial to the Toyota E-locker, because I have one in the rear now, and had one in my 4Runner, and in the 5 years that I've been wheeling with these lockers, I have never had a problem, and I know them and trust them. The front diff on the Tacoma is driverside. I know that on the FJ80 it is passenger side. Short of having to modify either the transfercase or the axle housing on the FJ80 frontend, I was wondering if there are LC's that came with the diff on the driver's side??? My understanding is that the E-locker can be retrofitted into any 8" front LC diff? Thanks for any help.

I'm pretty sure that all Land Cruisers had their diffs on the right like the front mini truck axles. I had a Tacoma and Toyota did make it had to use Toyota axle housings with the truck if you want to do a SAS. I'm not aware of anyone using a Toyota diff on a SAS for a Tacoma, but I could be wrong.

If you really want a high pinion locking chunk one option (expensive one) is a custom housing.

That was Tom@trailcarnage 's Truck, Tacoma engine, trans, T-case, IH Scout frame, 80 locking rear, 80 locking front chunk, 60 knuckles,

He has done several Tacoma SAS's including one on coils, Might be a good guy to talk to about it.

No cruiser ever came with a DS offset...only PS.

with a FJ40/60 housing, there is no reason you can't swap it end for end...you'd have to cut/rotate the knuckles 180 degrees and you'd have to cut away/strengthen/drill/tap the cover to accept the diff, then run a stock cover, but there's zero reason it wouldn't be doable.

Same outta work on a mini housing, but you'd have to create your own new front cover, or take the cutoff one and reweld onto the front.

sounds very doable to me....

Look now we got Woody slumin in 80's tech. LOL :D

Okay, thanks for the replies, everyone.

Check hardcore tech, there is a thread where cali-cruiser swapped a fj40 housing end for end and dropped it in a cherokee. (polishing a turd. :D )

I've seen a FZJ105, and it also has the front diff on the right (US passenger) side. Toyota minis/4runners up through '95 had their diffs on that side, too, but I think the '96-02's and taco's have the diff on the other side. The 98-03 hilux pickup (overseas) also has the diff on the right side (same frame/suspension as on the 86-88 4runner...front t-bars and rear leafs)

Alright.. so I may have had a beer or two tonight... (damn, sensing a patter here... ) but I was watching Junkyard wars a couple years back when we had cable (another story, sorry) the show was some sort of swamp buggy battle I think, IIRC.. not important though.

So anyway this one team's transmission starts failing, and they no longer have any forward gears.. Some :princess: on the team starts whining away, all is lost, etc.. then this engineer dude says "let's just flip the axle" and 5 minutes later they were back in business... they put it in reverse and drove forward to the finish line.

So considering that it would be a mod and a half to put 80 axles on a Taco anyway, do you really need to use the existing coil spring perches, and control arm mounts? What else is there? Obviously you've got (or have access to) some welding and fab skills, or you wouldn't be asking the question in the first place.. so why not flip the axle?  go Nuggets!

Nak- you answered your own question.

You must also flip the third 180 degrees on the housing.

Not difficult with a 40/60 housing, but I think the 80 series locking front thirds are significantly asymetrical and so are more difficult to rotate that 180.
