Noticed a very bouncy ride since getting back from Moab and Colorado late this summer. Figured I had just blown out the shocks. Finally got around to replacing them and look at what I found. Not just blown seals, but a much bigger failure.

Anyone else with a similar fox story. Did i install incorrectly? Is this just bad QC?

Many miles on washboard in the escalante is my guess. What happened to the threads on the shock body?

Steel on aluminum no bueno?

I was able to remove the mount on the good shock by finger and it was loose as hell.

If you are going to do “a lot” of washboards......I’d upgrade to reservoir shocks to help with heat. and then maybe treat those threaded items with some loctite.

I’ve had a few Fox issues on forks/bikeworld. But in general fox has been pretty descent .

On the 80 my 2.0s are proving rather durable and long lived but I don’t do any long duration washboards frequently.

On salvaging those....I wonder if you could just try cutting some larger initial threads and then letting an oversized steel replacement threaded pin finish the rebore. Red loctite and get one more life cycle out of em,? Personally I’d toss em in the trash and grab some 2.0’s with reservoirs.

My guess is that they don’t like being used as down travel stops. Unless the arms are binding before the shocks fully extend, which I doubt. I’m surprised more people don’t install limiting straps.

I’m just getting into the LC world myself. Trying to decide which Fox to run. Definitely getting reservoir shocks, just trying to decide if I should get stem tops or just eyelets all the way around and custom make mounts.

Use limiting straps! And yes. That shock can be repaired! The front passenger shock on my 80 right now had to have a new, threaded extension welded on by me..... has held for 1 1/2 years so far. (Knock on wood!)

i SAW SAME THING IN MOAB IN JAN. AND ANOTHER TIME AT ROUSH OFFROAD FOX TOLD THEM SORRY OFFROAD USE ONLY.

Bump stops and limit straps. Your shocks were the limiting factor in your suspension travel.

This. This is most likely your problem with the shocks failing like they did.
