Why I will think twice before ever buying another "locked" 80...

Used Center Actuator: $100
Used Transmission relay: $50
New front and rear actuators (And no the old ones were not re-buildable): $824
New Lock position sensor: $23
New breather tubes, breather vents, and fittings: $29
RTV silicone, new bolts, etc: $20

Total cost of getting lockers up and running, not counting the hours spent working, diagnosing issues and driving to remote locations for parts: $1046

Then, when I assume I paid about a $1500 premium to buy a "locked" 80, albeit a non-working lockers one, vs. a non-locked 80, the cost of having a "locked" 80 goes to about $2546. Perhaps I would have been better off just getting a good non-locked 80 and putting some air-lockers on it?

On the other hand, finally watching those lights light up today for the first time put a grin on my face as wide as a country mile...

Was the rig stored in a river?[/QUOTE]
LMAO, that is freaking hilarious. I was assuming it was diagnosis by parts trial, but your idea sounds more plausible.:hillbilly:

Why would you pay a premium for non-working lockers? I would have assumed they were completely shot and used that to bargain the price down.

That was the advice Lance at Iron Pig Off Road gave me several years ago, and after reading this, I am glad I followed his advice.

I haven't noticed a premium for lockers. A lot of people don't even know what they have.

That's about $846 more than I paid for my lock rites for my non-locked 80.

Pat

I have noticed a 2000 dollar premium for a locked rig. Example a non locked 94 will go for around 4000 to 4500. That same truck locked is easily 6000 to 6500.

Its too bad that this was your experience. How did you determine everything needed to be replaced?? I've had troublesome lockers that took a good many weeks/ months to loosen up but, never did I have to replace anything.

I've found most people on craigslist don't know what lockers are. Its good to at least try to actuate them on a test drive in a gravel parking lot or something. If they don't work or are slow to engage its a bargaining point.

Whether or not there is a premium, if the owner knows or cares about lockers than yes I've found there to be a premium but, most don't.

I'd rather buy a well maintained mall cruiser with sticky/ stuck lockers anyway.

I want to know where you got two new actuators for $824? I paid over $700 just for the rear from CDan. In Canada, at the Lexus/ Toyota dealer it was over CAN$1200!

I've never paid a premium for lockers... PO had no idea they existed. At least you're good for the next 20 years

Pat's talking about a lock-rite which is a solution for the rear axle. It's an "always on" locker (mechanical) that allows for slippage when you're turning so it doesn't 'hop' around corners and put strain on the drivetrain.

It's a nice, cost-effective solution for the back.

Did i miss the part where u test drove the truck?

PO said he paid 824 for two new elocker actuators.... Hell of a deal I think.

Yeah, now you can look forward to twisted splines if you ever wheel anything bigger than a 35". Not sure why everyone's so crazy about the factory elocker.

what's y'alls take on factory lockers that are slow to DISengage? i'm hoping sticky and will work themselves back into action over time.

Mine has had 37" tires on it for ~100mi and thousands of trail miles. :meh: They work well. :meh:

Yeah, I paid 4600 for my 96 w/ lockers. The rear blinks but it locks up. I guess I could see replacing everything for peace of mind, but I am doubtful everything failed at once. But as mentioned previously, your good for the life of your vehicle now.

it is to late but you could of did the air locker conversion, there are a couple threads on it , just putting in here for others who might read this .
