Why I will think twice before ever buying another "locked" 80...

So yeah, I didn't just willy-nilly go Fxxx it and replace everything. And yes I did test drive it and the PO did knowledge that the lockers didn't work, but from reading posts I thought that getting them working again wouldn't be too much of a hassle, ya know just "working them out" and such. I wanted lockers, so I was willing to pay more for a rig with them, even not working, hindsight is 20/20 and all that jazz. For those of you that haven't bought your rig within the last couple of years, just so you know the cat is out of the bag on locked 80's and it is getting damn hard to find anyone with one that doesn't know what that option is worth.

My first course of action was to figure out why the CDL wasn't working since I knew from posts that the front and rears wouldn't work unless that was working, By using my multi-meter, 9V battery etc, I diagnosed that the actuator was not working, so I pulled it off and the insides were complete trash, I mean I've seen some posts of ugly looking insides but mine were worse...so I sourced a used one and got it on...still nothing, again the multimeter showed that the signals weren't correct, so I go the new relay put on..I then had locking CDL. I then went back out and "excercised" the lockers trying to get the front and rear to lock..nothing. So I then looked into those, and to make a long story short it was the two actuators, which were also completely corroded on this inside, in my opinion beyond rebuildable, so yeah maybe it was left in a river before I bought it or something. The PO said he bought it out of New York, maybe that had something to do with it. Also the front indicator switch was not working, so that got replaced. Anyway, it was a long and expensive fix, but they are working now, and they are fast and sweet to lock up too. The junked old lockers are already spoken for by the first person the PM'd me asking about them for parts. Also, I bought the new lockers from Akella, out of Canada..pretty much half the price of everywhere else I've seen.

This thread now has me scared of my non-locking lockers. I bought a 94 with lockers and I cannot get my CDL light to light up. It sounds like I am in the same boat that you were when you started. I need to figure out the CDL light issue first and then hopefully the lockers will then engage. I have installed a CDL switch and when I push it i hear the actuator make a noise but the light still never comes on. Should the CDL light illuminate for a second or two when I turn the key on like several other dash lights do? I have never seen my CDL light lit.

From my experience arb air lockers gave me alot of problems when I had them in my samurai. Now that I have a 93 cruiser with them e lockers id say they are a bit more reliable but they still fail me once in a while but I will not go back to air. For some reason my elockers tend to get water inside evrytime I cross a river or something AND I do seal them. Its frustrating ... But I will not go back to air lockers. just my opinion

I have not ever installed arb or other air lockers, but I would think it would be a lot of work for someone who had never done it, if you payed someone to install both, and all pluming + the compressor your looking at 4+ grand depending on how far you go on rebuilding axles, so you still saved money.

have you extended the actuator breather.

YMMV, but I'm not so sure the OP's experience is typical.

When I was shopping for my 80, I was testing the lockers carefully to make sure they were working, which I was looking for. Didn't mention it when they were, but sure did so when they didn't...

So, it's reasonably easy to find out if they are in working condition or not before purchase, and if they aren't it's likely they are just unexercised. That takes care of the price issue. That does leave the twisted splines bit, but that seems highly unlikely to happen with reasonable tires. I've read the odd horror story here but they are hardly all over the place, unlike our dreaded HG issues that are not that unlikely to happen.

So, no regret here in getting a triple-locked and not worried about it. But yes, had I found a superlative mint unlocked 80, I might have gotten it and put in airlockers as time and $$ allow. Good way to go also, but not my preference. I got my lockers for free so to speak so what's not to like?

Now, OTOH, if somebody pays extra for OEM lockers and then later finds out they aren't there, as has been reported here once or twice...

IIRC my CDL light comes on when it's shifted to low

I paid $3000 for my truck in pretty good condition, with working lockers.

Paying extra for a truck with lockers that don't work is like paying extra for an empty XL Slurpee cup. It's still empty

But if you don't need a drink, an XL Slurpee is way cooler.:hillbilly:

No shame in it, if you did.

They're new and should function for, at least, as many years/miles as those they replaced.

Everyone on Mud paid one-fifth the average price for a pristine, mechanically flawless locked 80, with half the average miles, and usually within a few days of beginning the search.

Something to keep in mind.

Sorry for being a dick and LOL'ing. That wasn't nice.

I have to agree, when haggling over a price you have to be willing to just walk away. Case in point I was haggling over a nice condition '96 with inop lockers, SRS & CEL lights lit and a knocking noise from the P/S pump. He had just come down from 7200 to 6800. I offered him 5K and walked away with a final offer of 5.2K, he called me that evening and said come and get it. This was less than 90 days ago. 1 rebuilt P/S pump, clear the codes for the CEL & SRS, and actuate the snot out of the lockers and it is good to go.
If the lockers do not lock, it does not have them, period. Sorry to hear you got the short end of the stick.

Yeah that's why this New Yorker bought a west coast truck... and paid a premium for it.

Well anyway you're all set up now.
