Shopping for a used 100 or LX, as I look at more of these rigs. The combo stereo nav , climate unit scares the crap out of me.

Anyone have experience with getting them repaired? Obviously nothing else will replace the factory unit.

Is it common to have some kind of failure? I have been reading thru the 100 section it appears they do have issues how many of you have had them?

I have an '02 with 75k miles on it and have never had any problems with the Nav unit or stereo.i think that you shouldn't be afraid of buying one with, but if you want to upgrade the sound system I would look for one without the Nav.

Correct.

Finding an LC with the double-din non-NAV shouldn't be too hard and it will make changing the audio system much easier. That said, my LX has 135K with, knock wood, no issues.

it is a potential concern but it looks like the odds of having some problems are very low. Not exactly an epidemic of problems out there. And there are ways to fix them cheaper than buying a new OEM system. I would not let a Nav Sys prevent me from buying an otherwise desirable truck. Some folks may even feel it's a plus as it does have the advantages of full integration too.

We are they in regards to the retrofit kit?? Havent seen anything posted about it in awhile. Have been looking for a new 100 myself and haven't seen any yet without NAV post '03. My wife prefers the newer interior.

I just sold my rig so now I can really start the search. Like e9999 said there havent been a lot if any noted failures of the NAV system ...yet. They are 10 years old now so if it was a big problem we would have heard about it.

It should scare you. Im scared of mine every time I jump in the truck. But at the same time, it shouldn't deter you from buying a good example of a Land Cruiser. There are other issues to worry about.

If you are scared because you want to add stuff to your stock unit...I would say it's a decent scare to have. I have a 01' LX that has the nav/climate controls on the screen...I am still trying to find the right interface to at least hook up my iphone/ipad to the friggin thing without using the TAPE adapter...seriously...it 2012...it literally is the future...tape adapter...that's horrible...and no I am not going to use an FM adapter...

This is in progress if it interests you. Not my project, but I am in line to get one once complete. Retrofit Kit for NAV/HVAC

Nav issues are very rare. The internet as always magnifies any issues because for every person who reports an issue there are thousands who don't report because nothing is wrong.

With that said, there is a bad year for Nav which is mine, 2004. There is a TSB covering bad NAV units in Land Cruiser, Highlander, and Prius. I took mine apart, repaired, and it's working great again. However I've seen/heard of very few issues here in the MUD section over the past two and half years.

I would not be worried in the least bit. And if it is a deal breaker then buy a 98-02 without factory Nav. Finding a 03+ without factory Nav is like finding a unicorn.

Do a search on the USA SPEC BTC-TOY. Easy to install bluetooth audiostreaming and hands free phone for your '01 nav system. I installed it and it is fantastic.

It just sucks as a head unit. Reliability questions aside.

I dunno, in my mind this is subjective. I will always use a iPhone/iPod for my audio source. With a integration adapter like Vais or US SPEC I'm completely happy with the audio quality and audio controls. Now I know we have some audiophiles out there, but that is not the majority of owners.

Will I replace it once you finish the 03+ non-nav project, more than likely yes. However more so for the reason I don't want it to die again.

I had thought that I would have to use the other wired version that USASPEC sells. You say the bluetooth version works on the 2001 LX470 with NAV and integrated climate controls Nakamichi system? If so, my search is over!

Sorry, I am mistaken. I just checked usaspec.com and the BTC-TOY works on 2002+, but the 2001 is not listed.

What is the difference in the Nav systems between 01 and 02?

USA SPEC lists the PA15-TOY as available for 2001+

Toyota is up to "Generation 6" of their factory navigation units. 2001 to 2002 was the switchover between Gen 2 and Gen 3. Some of the adapters are only capable with Gen 3 and above units.

Generation 1
1999-2000

Generation 2/3
2001-2003

Generation 4
2004-2007

Generation 5
2008

You know what's scary? A 120F day and your climate is set at MAX HOT and you either give a voice command for a colder temp, or sit in the sauna for 1 minute as you hold down the button to lower the temp.
