i have a 94 toyota pickup with a 22re motor with 151K on it. the oil was changed yesterday afternoon (put like 5.5 quarts), after that we went playing around in the gravel pit and all was good. today we went out and when on an incline (not even steep ones) the truck pours white smoke out the tailpipe, but it stops when you get back on level ground and rev it a couple times. we checked the oil and in shows normal level. any idea why this would happen, we thought maybe it was overfilled with oil but it didn't do it last night and the level looks good in the dipstick. it also is full of coolant and doesnt seem to be losing any of that. any ideas of what to check out? thanks

This sometimes means that your valve stem seals are leaking. What happens is that when on an incline, the oil will run to the back of the cylinder head and puddle up around the valve springs. Then engine vacuum pulls oil past the intake seal on the #4 cylinder. Pull the plugs, see if they are all the same color.

another place to check...

after it does it for a bit, get it back level, let er cool down, unbolt the two bolts at the cat. dont have to remove it. just enuff to pull apart the pipes and look for coolant. be gentle with the flange, you dont want to destroy the gasket.

Check you pcv valve. It could be allowing oil to pass through it.

White smoke is usually coolant burning. Oil smoke is more bluish.

you dont mention what tranny you have but automatic tranny fluid burns white. hope you get it figured out

we put in a new pcv valve and plugs (wern't oil fouled), and changed the oil agian (no water in oil) but it sill does it. had some people suggest that it may be a fuel problem, like it is putting too much fuel in there when on inclines and underload.

Fuel should be black smoke. I'm pretty sure with white smoke you are talking about an oil problem (and I'll also bet that it's a bit blueish).... 2ndgen's explanation makes sense to me.

If you were to idle the truck on an incline, do you have the same problem? Or only with the engine working on an incline?

we have not pulled the valve cover yet (it is my bro in laws truck and we left their house before i had the chance to). i also think it is oil related, there are times when the smoke is a bit bluish. it happens when both at an idle or on the throttle (on an incline)

Is there a delay at all from when the truck is inclined to the smoke starting? And if it happens faster when the engine is reved up than when idleing, that would also point to the blocked oil passage... as it takes longer for the valve train to get flooded.

i have a toyota and ive seen one of my buddies toyotas do the same thing. I wheel with a bunch of yotas but only our 2 trucks smoke on steep inclines. I think its just all of oil backing up. I wouldnt worrr about it. It only does it 1 out of every 20 hills or so.
