Pulled a 89 home a few weekends ago with 130K and a knock. I can see a bolt is partially screwed into the galley plug hole. I suspect the plug came out, and the motor lost all the oil at some point. The galley hole wasn't threaded, someone just forced a small bolt in the hole and it still leaks. I haven't pulled the motor apart yet so i don't know the extent of the damage. I'm assuming the worst, regrind the crank, line bore the block etc.

I've done a bunch of searching and everything seams to be on the 2f. Does anyone offer a high quality rebuild kit or do i need to piece one together. What stuff needs to be OEM, what can i get from SOR etc. I've never called cruiser Dan, but issume he would be a good source?

I don't mind spending the money to do it right, i didn't pay much for the truck and its in great shape

I bought the gasket and seal bits from Dan. You can get most of the parts under one part number from Toyota. The engine builder provided the bearings, pistons and rings.

I'm the engine builder, so i need to supply the parts.

Are you the machinist too? Or are you the assembler only?[/quote]

I'll have someone do all the machine work, but I will assemble the motor. Never done a 3f before, only a 2f. I built a 2f for a friend and used stuff from SOR. I've read that maybe OEM stuff is better. Just trying to get some opinions.

I rebuilt my 3FE. I got the engine work done at a local shop and with his purchasing power I bought the gaskets and seals through them. No complains on the parts. Bearings came out of Japan and were marketed under Clevite brand name for the US market.
I had the crank, block, head and rods machined and I did the assembly.

Have a talk with your engine machinist place, they should be able to order your parts that you will need. And get your cam reground by Delta Camshaft....there is a huge discussion (see my sig line)....its a good deal.

I have yet to see after market gaskets for a 2F (and it's likely true for the 3F) that were half as good as the Toyota gaskets. The two big issues are the pan gasket, (Toyota is one-piece, the after markets are three-piece and leak) and the head gaskets. The after market HGs stink. Some even have the holes in the wrong places. Just not worth the risk there.

I bought everything from Toyota (35% discount is the only reason I did), bearings, seals, lifters, rings and all. I bought the cam and AISIN oil pump after market. Make sure you use toyota lifters if you do replace them. Toyota has an engine seal and gasket kit as well. I also bought new head bolts and after 10,000 miles the head bolts have not needed any re-tourquing. I have heard of other people having issue with the head bolts needind much re-tourquing after their rebuilds so to me it was a no brainer, and after hearing that I was glad I went in that direction. Good luck on your rebuild!!
