Any input? Our house is dry as hell and frankly I'm sick of filling humidifier reservoirs. I saw THIS and wondered if anyone had any input on these. Do they work, what's the maintenance like, how hard is the install, etc?????

no maintenance to speak of. makes a difference. The one I got doesn't get the humidity up to where I'd like it in the coldest part of the year, but it helps.

My install was easy because I already had the water feed and humidistat in place.

I have a similar one. Only maintenence is to change the water pad about a year, about $10 or $12 and takes 5 min. There is a small restrictor in the water line that can get clogged if you have hard water but that's easy to clean.

We have an older version of that Honeywell with the Honeywell Whole House Humidistat. It works okay but it took us a while to get the correct setting. We would see a lot of condensation build-up on the lower corners of our windows in the morning until we found the right setting. The only maintenance was swapping out the humidifier pad.

I have an Aprilaire 600 and it does help. The one you linked is probably equivalent to the Aprilaire 700 which does not require a bypass to the return air side of the furnace and would be easier to install.

I've got an older model of this one: Amazon.com: Aprilaire Model 700 Automatic Whole-house Powered Humidifier with Digital Control: Home Improvement

Just has analog controls instead of the nifty digital whoop-de-do. Also has an exterior sensor so that it can modify the interior humidity depending on the exterior temperature. I didn't install that initially and when it really got cold I'd get condensation on the windows. With it installed, it dials back on the humidity as it gets colder outside.

As mentioned, only maintenance is to replace the water pad each fall before heating season starts. Every couple years I have to take a bit more time and clean some of the scale that has accumulated out of the rest of the unit - toothbrush and some vinegar is about all it takes. If you have really hard water, this could be a bit more effort.

I hate them, they can cause mold in your walls and attic. Use a humidistat like Gummers and check your attic regularly for mold growth.

I've seen a few with problems. Biggest issue is people don't know to change the pad out. The Honeywell is a good unit.

What sort of humidity are you looking for in your house.

I've got the whole refill the humidifiers as well issue. I give that chore to the kids.
