They are pretty much all the same by manufacturer, unless they are defective.
The strength varies more by ratio, with higher numerical ratio being weaker (as the diameter of the pinion gear decreases).

Seriously though, I agree with pinhead. No one is gonna use junk steel and stay afloat in this area. The larger your "pigion" (sorry that's too much fun) the thinner your ring will have to be and that will produce some weakness along with some other factors I'm sure I'm missing.

Now springs is another story ... you can definitely find junk steel springs. :bounce2:
 
Find a vendor that offers to cryo your gears. Helps a little.

Actually it's just the opposite. As the ratio goes up numerically, the pinion gets smaller, hence weaker. I've never heard of anyone breaking a ring gear.
