Hey Dan, if you can swing it go with the mill. You may not use it all the time, but it gives you versatility, precision, and its fun to make your own stuff! You already have a drill press for the misc. stuff - good addition for the shop!

You can thank me later.

IRS Auction Search

Go to auction search and then click on drill presses.

You can usually find something somewhat close. If not you caould always call in a favor from a friend.

I have an old clausing I'm going to sell but you're too far away.

You should be able to find a decent old used mill easily for under $1k. If not, you're not looking in the right places.

Have a USA made Linley vertical Milling machine and it is awsome.........it is sweet to use and just love the precision.........rarely use the old Drill press....USA made Craftsmen

Did you find anything yet?

Sold my clausing drill press the other day. Had my son out in the garage today working on his pinewood derby car. At 8, he's running the mill mostly himself with me just being there keeping an eye on safety, raising/lowering the quill and helping with the dro (pics from today - including the fact you always need to chug a diet coke when working in the garage lol).

Was at a sale on Friday and saw 3 old but decent J head bridgeports go real cheap and one old powermatic drill press that was so cheap I almost had to buy it even if just to give away.

A vise is a mandatory accessory IMHO.
Even an inexpensive indexed vise is an even better option.
I have one similar to the one below. All it does is make positioning the work faster. I wouldn't trust it to drill a series of holes based on the cranks alone.

I've worked with some pretty crappy old mill's before. You can compensate for backlash by always running up to your position from the same direction.
