At least in 2000? My (broken) windshield says PPG on it. Was that OEM? My insurance directed me to Glass America for the repair. They claim to use Pilkington brand.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Thanks

I recently replaced my 2000 LX windshield. I received incredibly low-ball prices from 3rd parties (less that $500). I then went to the dealer and received a quote of $1,600. However, I learned the windshield moldings, and maybe the windshield itself, are of very low quality from 3rd parties.

I had a zero deductible from my insurance company so the decision was easy. However, be careful if not going OEM glass and moldings.

I have a $100 deductible, so it will be some mainstream glass company. That my windshield is aftermarket now explains why the molding above the passenger door has never been set in place correctly.

have them use OEM glass

I guess the question is, "what defines OEM?" Glass America claims that Pilkington is OEM glass. The Pilkington web site is unclear, but they certainly manufacture under several names.

I will question the installer about the remainder of the installation. I'm sure the glass will be fine, but I don't want a leak over my ECU, or anywhere else for that matter.

OEM GLASS IS THE GLASS WITH TOYOTA on it.

Pilkington is a major glass supplier to the auto industry and is probably good quality. They are OEM to somebody. Whether or not they make the 100 glass for Toyota would probably be hard to find out.

From - Rob's Glass
Pilkington ARG provides glass under many different labels. They provide OEM glass to many of the car manufacturers under several of their brands. These include among several others LN, ULN, LOF, Triplex and Pilkington.

Another OEM manufacturer worthy of note is PPG , Pittsburg, Paint & Glass, makes excellent glass and is a frequent winner of contracts for Toyota and Honda models.

I just had my windshield replaced and I recommend the company, Novus Glass of Colorado Springs. They came to my house in a fully stocked shop van. The two guys doing the work own the franchise and were clearly pros. They hadn't done a 100 before and said it was a bit more difficult than some others. Done at my house in about 2 1/2 hours for $209 using Pilkington glass.

Novus does great glass repairs in my experience. One guy offered to come to my school last winter and repair it while I was in class. I didn't have anything to pay him with though so he came to my house on Saturday morning.

This winter a novus franchise in vail/eagle in Colorado came to my hotel in vail to fix a chip.

Windshields are a wear & tear item. I'm on my 4th. As long as they use OEM gaskets, the installer knows what he/she is doing, you keep it dry for a few days for the seal to cure, and the glass is free from defects (even the best suppliers will have some glass with optical defects at the edges), then you should be good to go. Inspect the glass before it is installed and look for wavy lines. I had a Safelite that I made them do over due to optical defects. You may also want to make sure it is the correct tint (my LC came with a copper tint and copper sunshade and I have had to look for suppliers that could match it). Then go for price. After all, you're likely to replace it again. :bang:

I have never paid more than $450 - and usually closer to $300 - for a replacement. Current one is a PPG (Yes, Toyota OEM) that cost less than $350 installed.

As it turned out, there were two choices for glass for the 100 - bronze or smoke. The smoke tint was only available through the dealer and the bronze was available commercially for some reason. I have one of those ugly silver/gray/champaigne/ginger ale colored trucks with the gold trim and pinstripes, so the bronze was for me.

Even though they quoted me Pilkington glass, it ended up being PPG again.

The installer was decent, but he pinched off my parrott microphone wire and stripped the set screw for the rear view mirror. To save anxiety, I fixed them myself.

bronze is for 98-03, in 04 they started with the other color, at least on the side windows. The front window I think they changed in 03, but I could be off on that.

Just Don't use SafetyGlass. It was only $230. But cracked within 2 months.

Had my LX windshield crack in Montana while relocating from San Franciso to Montreal. Insurance allowed the used of OEM but my $250 deductible was applied. They would have waived the deductible if I went with a non-OEM windshield. Since my US insurance would only do the work in the US, I drove down to Plattsburgh, NY. According to the owner of the windshield shop the Lexus windshield was >$2000. She sat there and watched her best guy do the work because if it got broke it was on her.

The factory has Toyota on the glass, in 2001 Lexus started using their name instead of Toyota on the factory glass.

PPG is the authorized replacement and my PPG is a duplicate of the Lexus except for the name. There is a bronze color in the early years, then it went to green tint. The installer must use the Toyota/Lexus seal and molding pieces to install it correctly. It is best to get an installer with experience, the 100 is not a simple replacement.

Dont use LSI glass. It fogged up within months and I cant find out who haandles it in Texas.Never had a problem with PPG. MIke
