I'll have to check the mileage..My radiator was leaking below the shroud, and I'd have to add water every other week, then last week the thermostat stuck, fortunately I happened to look down and caught the temp gauge heading to the moon and was able to coast to a parking lot and let her cool down. Replaced the T-stat and radiator, then had to deal with transmission lines leaking because the fittings were lose on the new radiator and I didn't catch it.

I only wish I had been ready with the parts for the timing belt change while I had the radiator out...Now I'll have to pull it all apart again soon...oh well.

I would have never put a Tundra motor in, they are physically very different. JMO

Let's forget about opinion here. What have you found to be different? How many of these swaps have you performed? I ask because I searched this forum thoroughly before swapping a Tundra engine into my LC and found little aside from opinion and speculation. Having performed the swap a couple of times now, I can assure you that the engines are 98% similar. Very straight forward as far as swaps go.

One is US made and one is Japanese made. One has forged connecting rods, and one has cast connecting rods.

The US component is the biggest part, for me, I dont have faith in the US laborer.

Sorry to ruffle some feathers, take it easy.

Thought it would be interesting to see how many miles members have on their 100 series LC's and what problems they have had at what mileage. Also what kind of maintance are you doing at what mileage to get trouble free miles.

I have a 99 LC with 67K miles, only problem is the antenna quit working. I do serious maintance by the book plus replaced all hoses and belts at the 6 year old stage since mine is a southern AZ vehicle that was in a lot of heat.

What is your story???

Funny I started this thread back in 7/2006 and it is still going. I'm on my 4th 100 series :)

2003 with 159 662 miles. Only issues I can think of so far have been a bolt on the Pass. door window guide came loose. Easy fix. Hood struts got weak. I recharged them and the passenger side front diff. seal went out on me. That wasn't too bad to replace either.

Those were the only unexpected things. Everything else was a wear item like brakes, bushings and bearings.

I'm due for some BJ's soon though. I was hoping to get 250K+ from this truck but I thought I smelled oil in the exhaust when I fired it up in the garage today. We'll see.

You're due for what?

My brake motor next to the brake fluid container started buzzing after first rains yesterday,
But not when I was driving in the pouring rain, only 3 hours later after the rain stopped & it was still damp, I open the hood and shook the motor and it stopped buzzing. The handbrake light & ABS light came on in the beginning, then when I stopped the buzzing just the ABS light was left on, and after a 5 km trip to my brothers house, when I went home, all lights were off, problem solved... Has anyone ever had this? Should I be changing brake fluid? Checking wiring...

Now that the 100 series stopped being produced in 2007 I wonder what the average mileage is on members rigs? If you averaged 15k miles a year and the mean age of our cruisers is 10 years that would mean 150k miles. Looks like many report over 200k miles with just normal service and you really don't read about any major problems at any mileage with rigs that are used for the service the 100 series was designed for. These are very impressive rigs.

I think those 80 guys are getting jealous. 200k or more with almost no HG failures.

They complain about our starters but a 4hr job once every 125k isn't note worthy.

I think the new version of the head gasket is improved and won't fail again....wish they had an improved steering rack for the 100....

2003+ they received updated starter contacts so that is no longer an issue.

FWIW the 4R has 103k with ZERO issues and the LC has 150k with ZERO issues as well.

They both like brakes, however. 3rd set (pads/rotors/calipers) on cruiser, 2nd (just rotors and pads) on 4R. Both have been perfectly maintained by the dealer going above and beyond normal service.

I'm going to overhaul the suspension on the Cruiser at 180k and 120k on the 4R.

what's the source for that? hadn't heard this before but good to know if it's true. Also depending on the nature of the upgrade pre '03 folks should be able to 'upgrade' to the post '03 part?

It's not scientific, but the complete lack of failures on here and V8 4Runner's of 03+ model years. Some with over 200k on them. I'm sure Beno can edumucate us.

Made it to 300k, only 700k to go

I agree with calamari on this too ... maybe the topic should be changed and made a sticky.

I'm guilty of being a picky when I spend $60K for a vehicle... I expect my money's worth. I could have paid cash for a GM and stayed out of debt.. but I didn't want to spend all my time at the dealer seeking repairs.

As a follow up to my new Land Crusier problems. They finally reset the T-bar pre-load on the driver-side. Its the way it should have been adjusted from the factory. Both front R/L side ride heights are even, and the spring rate feels the same now.

That was the easy part..

As far as the knock coming from the suspension... they had it for five (5) days trying to figure this out with Toyota engineers involved. They found the layers in the frame were coming into contact and popping when the frame flexed... causing it to knock intermittently, no rhyme or reason. I spoke with the lead mechanic at he said it drove them crazy trying to locate the source.

I'm still unclear how they actually fixed it.. saying something to the effect they located the area through the holes in the frame and tapped or separated the inner layers so they don't come into contact.

I asked if Toyota had a TSB on it.. they said no, but the engineers heard of this happening before.

I still may follow up with a Toyota field engineer for a re-inspection.
Did they tell you exactly what made the knocking noise. I have a similar problem and can't figure out what is causing it. I ve change numerous parts up front with no results. Any insight would be great! Thank you.

05 LX just hit 110,000 Miles yesterday. Original owner, only wear items and a couple of cv joints, on 2nd battery but need a new one, 4th set of tires, just did 90k service, new rotors and pads all around....everything on the truck works perfectly except the memory seats. They stopped working a couple months ago and I haven't bothered to get it checked out.

04 LC just hit 93,000 miles yesterday. 2nd owner, all records, nothing on that other than wear items as well.

I plan on keeping both for a long time.

My wife's '98 LC has 275,000 miles and the only thing we've ever had to replace is the rear heater condenser for the back seat. Albeit that also cost us all new carpeting for the rear to since it smelled like antifreeze. That was done about just under the 200,000 mark.

Other than timing chains, that's it!

My '98 has 215,000 and nothing at all other than maintenance. I have to admit I have a little cancer growing on the driver side, top of my windshield. I believe that was caused by a poor installation by a previous owner. I need to get that fixed soon.

Oh, and on both, the radio antennas have gone out. (Don't go up and down.) Fixed my wife's, mine has one of the little boxes that attaches to the windshield. I hate it. I'm going back to a traditional antenna when I can afford it.
