I see a lot of threads, but haven't come across anyone that has successfully installed an aux gas tank in a pre 2003 100. I am looking at the Front Runner tank and was hoping someone could chime in on the install process and any potential problems they encountered?

Edit, oops, I see spressomon has, but his post is scaring me on the electronics. Hoser too, now that I have re-searched.

Fernando at Campinglabs tells me the kit comes with a dual filler neck that allows to fill both tanks at the same time and also allows to transfer fuel from the aux. gas tank to the main tank. So it's not necessary to switch from the main tank to the aux but instead transfer the fuel from the aux to the main tank. This way the installation is a lot simpler than it would be if you had to switch from one tank to the other.

Anyone have an install with a pump that transfers fuel from the aux to the main? Assume this can be done on the fly (while driving), and a button to see aux tank level is not necessary. So this would not be a OEM-like aux tank.

Fernando at Campinglabs answered my question...

The transfer pump is operated manually with a dash mounted switch. You can do it on the fly, no need to stop.

The fuel transfer is done through the supplied dual filler neck, which is designed in such a way that, if the pump is accidentally left on the over flow will go back to the auxiliary tank avoiding spillage.

If any one needs a OEM 80 100 105 series aux tank you can pm me

Do you have access to the factory dual filler necks and all the associated bits that go along?

The factory aux set up for the 100 is different from the 80. The 80 OEM sub tank is a transfer system, the 100 is a redundant system, when you switch to the sub tank every thing, including the internal fuel pump switches over. Right now I trying to figure out how to automatically turn the pump off when the sub tank is empty. Georges ECU depends on a signal from the 80 series sending unit that is not present on the 100 series sub tank sending unit. I looked into simply using an 80 sending unit but they are pricey.

i actually think you have to stop and shut the car off before transferring. I may be wrong but I did read that somewhere.
No need to stop the vehicle. Most guys that run aux tanks in FJ40's and Jeeps set up their system this way.

The dual filler neck part number is 77201.
The associated bits will run into some $$$$$ if you want to do a true factory install. There is a solenoid and a metric ton of plumbing bits. At the end of the day I decided it was a lot easier to just set up a transfer system.

Hope this helps.

The dual filler neck allows you to fill both tanks from the same neck, not at the same time. It is an inverted Y, you point the gas nozzle at the opening for the tank you want to fill.

The transfer pump is plumbed into the main tank filler vent if you overfill the main tank it simply backs up into the Y and returns to the sub tank.

This is the factory dual filler neck, the frontrunner neck is different from what I've heard.

I have a Long Ranger on my '98. Happy to talk to you about it. 858.720.1339 Scott

The mid 80's GM Trucks with dual tanks has a momentary switch on the dash that you held down to transfer fuel from the AUX tank to the main tank if my memory serves me correctly. To do that, all you would need is a tank, pump, switch, and relay. No need for a gauge. Fill it up, transfer it over to the OEM tank when needed. You care about how much you have in the OEM anyway. Just keep an idea as to what you have to work with in the AUX and you should be OK considering the range of the OEM tank even when half-full.

I think I am going to pull the plug on the Front Runner Aux Tank - reading through this thread and others I don't see anything wrong with their implementation of a transfer pump, and some type of duel filler neck.

Anyone suggest I go a different direction?

Just ordered it, now that Fernando is back from AZ.

I was planning on using the OEM sub tank switch, but am not having any luck finding one, plus Christo tells me he hasn't been able to figure out how to make it work.

His ace mechanic Joe figured it out on mine...

Maybe different. Mine controls an OEM pump in the aux tank. I thought it was just an off/on switch...
