Cross posting from the 70 series forum in the hope to get a reply.

Good day,

A small problem I need some help with locating. Whenever I run my car there is a whining noise, like a turbo. It seems to increase when I accelerate and it goes down a bit when I'm at a constant speed.
When the clutch is pressed the noise remains. When the gear is in neutral the noise is gone.

Noise starts at about 2500rpm and gets higher in pitch as the revs increase.
So far I have heard two explanations:
- my mechanic: pump of power steering
- my bedouin friends in the desert (they are born in Landcruisers): the fan belt I use is not flat but has a pattern
Both do not make sense to me.

Bought the car earlier this year. 2009 model and less than 40k km.

Any pointers I can take back to the workshop?

Thanks!

You could try pouring some water on the belts while the engine is running, does the noise go away? Are you saying the noise goes away with the engine running if the transmission is in neutral, any rpm, any road speed, stationary?? What truck model do you have?

I have the FZJ76, but was referred to the 80 series forum as lots of people have the same engine (4.5 liter petrol EFI) and not many people the beloved 70 series :-)

To clarify: when I'm driving I can hear the noise. Only when I press the clutch and put the gear in neutral the noise is gone (free wheeling as it were).

Bad or loose belts? use a bar of soap on the edge of the belts to see if it stops.
Bearing in the transmission? Some have had issues with the front bearing making noise. Have you checked the fluid level in the trans and transfer case?

Use a stethoscope, stick or screwdriver and see if you can locate the source of the noise.

It would seem likely that a 2009 LC with 40K on it would still likely have the OEM belts; they should be quiet (as compared to aftermarket belts your Bedouin friends are likely referring to, which often make extra noise). Has a belt been replaced?

It would also seem that if your power steering pump were making noise (like if fluid was low), then it would make noise at lower rpms as well.

Since the noise apparently goes away in neutral (all rpms?), your shifter linkage might be out of adjustment and you could be hearing some transmission issues, such as a shifter fork pushing on a gear/syncro.

Check:

are fan belts adjusted? slipping? worn? OEM?
are all fluids topped off, including power steering and transmission.
is your gear linkage adjusted properly?

I have a similar problem, but mine only happens on long road trips and only when my son is with me. It sounds like rrr weeee therrrrre yeeeeeet. :D

Useful info. I only know how to start the car, so have some checking to do.

@Funner: have YOU tried the soap yet :-)
