Hey friends,

Time to replace the oil pan gasket. I've read the excellent tips, I'm prepared with 8 of the Fel-Pro ES 72865 Oil Pan Snap-Ups and a new Toyota oil pan gasket. My question is this - I read that there is a front and a back to the gasket. Which end points towards the engine? I do see some black markings on the gasket towards the top fwiw.

Thanks!

I honestly wasn’t sure myself so I just played w/ it on the pan. @joebattle1 just did his, maybe he can pipe in.

Not only did I just do it.... I did it twice.

It will only truly line up one way on the pan. Doesn’t mean you can’t get it wrong though. I can’t tell with it still in plastic but there should be some tabs on the gasket. I think it was two left one right. Those go to the front of the pan/engine. Maybe it’s those black lines but it’s hard to see in the plastic bag.

Do you have two or so longer bolts than the stock ones? I dug a few out of my misc Toyota hardware bin. It’s sort of a pill to get the bolts seated. Two longer bolts really helps. Do you have a helper? If not a tranny jack is also helpful. Or else’s @NeverGiveUpYota has a good “hold with the knee” application.

Also a crucial item is a 1/4 inch torque wrench. I got a cheap one from Harbor Freight. This takes the guesing out. Start in the middle and work your way out. The final torque is 69 inch pounds. I set mine to 50, did them all then went back and got them to 69.

As of last night... I officially have no more leaks.

Good luck. Reach back if you run into trouble.

Oh and I used 12 SnapUps. Every other hole. 8 will probably work just fine. You can read my last post in my build thread for a couple pics and tips. Do you have some TOY FIPG gasket goop? Gonna need some. If you don’t have any you can drive to any Toyota dealer parts desk and snag some.

Build thread is in my signature.

FIPG is a must. Used it first about 2 years ago and I’ll never use anything else. Line up the hole in the gasket to the holes in the pan.

I'm sure you have probably completed your install already, but I thought I would add mine as an alternative to the SnapUps. I completed this with ideas I gleaned off of other posts on this site...sorry for the lack of credit to those with the brilliant ideas! However, this is what worked great for both ease of install and no leaks. I put bump-outs on the cork gasket toward the front side of the oil pan (shallow side). I then tied strings with a simple overhand knot about every fourth hole to keep the gasket aligned while getting the oil pan into place. I also used four longer bolts to temp the pan up while and help insert bolts and verify the half-moon portions of the gasket were seated properly. I hope this helps someone out there that is going to take on this project.

Ugh this reminds me, I think I need to replace my pan gasket. I got oil leaking out from somewhere making a mess on the undercarriage, and I think it's from the gasket.
