Which tire to buy and why?

Four-wheel drive with just one set of chains is always going to be a compromise. I would recommend keeping the chains in the front for steering control and only moving them to the rear if you are doing a lot of slick down hill travel (coming down a mountain pass). In a down hill situation the possiblility of the rear losing traction while braking and swinging around to the front is more important.

I have 4 chains to avoid having to think about it too much.

I guess that would work for stopping, but unless he had lockers, neither chain would be effectiive for getting the vehicle moving because the other wheel on each axle would spin and you'd go nowhere.

I agree, rear chains should be more than adequate for about 99% of the time.
 
Finally got my LC off-road this past weekend. Although we weren't doing anything really technical I was pleased with the new MT/R's ability to climb steep, loose, rock strewn slopes...the traction was amazing. Got to check out the lockers and low range too. I AM GLAD I BOUGHT A LC (and the MT/R's)!!!
 
I really would like some more information regarding the Goodyear Wrangler silen armor. I'm about to buy some tires in Canada and have them shipped to Greenland.
I would hate myself (if the Goodyear tires are crap) if I have to buy BFG after spending money on the Wranglers.

I'm wondering how many people who voted Revos (like myself) have also had the BFG's (like myself) ; I cant imagine anyone going back to BFG AT's after running the Revos - seems like anything negative mentioned so far is hear say and anything positive is from actual users. I've had two set of regular BFG AT's and one set of BFG KO's and I can comfortably say the REVO spanks all of em. JMHO, YMMV, :cheers:

I can not advise you with tyres because I do not know what sort of wheeling you do.

My advice is to consider the type of use that they will be experiencing and then select a range of tyres that fit that bill then narrow that down by taking further advice and by reading up on them and so on and so on. As tyres are always a compromise is may mean that you need two sets!.

This is sound advice, especially since he has already posted that he purchased his tires. :confused:
 
Goodyear MT/R's for me...I use the 285/75x16" and they are great..off road run them at 20 psi...terrific
 
calamaridog, how's the roadnoise and ride on the Geolanders?? Yokohama tires are really good IMO.

BTW, i had Nittos AT for about 2 weeks on my truck. I was NOT impress with them...the sidewall seemed thin...my stock Geolander H/T seemed to have a slightly thicker sidewall than Nittos.

I heard that Toyo MT tire (forgot exact name) is excellent...3-ply sidewall, good in mud, and very civilized on the highway (a rare thing among MT's)...but it's sizes are limited. :frown:

Well, I only have a few hundred miles on the Yokohama's but my initial impressions are very good. They ride quiet and handle well around corners. The sidewalls seem comparable to my prior set of BFG AT's which I ran on my Tacoma.

The reason I ended up choosing these over the Nittos was thread deapth and pattern. The lugs are bigger than most AT's and the Yokohama's have the most tread deapth of the popular AT's.

Wet handling will be tested tomorrow:)

Now just for cost savings and comparison, I purchase a new 285 75r16 NTG on ebay for $41 to use as my spare. This way, I can compare them up close;)

For the type of wheeling I will be doing in the near future, the Yokohama's should fit the bill. I'll know soon, as I'm going wheeling on the 14th.

As far as the Toyo MT's, they come highly recommended by the few people who are running them.

Christo, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the 100 uses a VC. T-case is open unless manually locked with the button or you go into Lo range.

So no worries about burning it out.

Good topic. It's good to hear others' experiences on the different makes and models. I gotta get rid of these stock Bridgestones!
 
I might as well follow up on my Yokohama Geolander ATII's...

The tires handled better than I expected when I went off roading last month. They clean out in the mud better than any other AT tire I've seen. Great overall performance for an AT tire. I still like the way they are driving on the highway too.

Certainly another good option other than expensive BFG's.
