Four-wheel drive with just one set of chains is always going to be a compromise. I would recommend keeping the chains in the front for steering control and only moving them to the rear if you are doing a lot of slick down hill travel (coming down a mountain pass). In a down hill situation the possiblility of the rear losing traction while braking and swinging around to the front is more important.
I have 4 chains to avoid having to think about it too much.
