Which Oil Filter Would You Rather Use?(TRD/OEM)

another unsolicited and unpaid bump for amsoil Signature Series filters. Assuming they're available and you're in da club.

Anyone ever use the Napa gold equivalent filter (FIL 7041)? I have had good luck with Napa Gold in the past for cheaper but still quality oil/air filters for various equipment/cars. Oil filter efficiency isn't as high as the Amsoil SS/good Donaldson stuff, but supposedly known for having a good contaminant capacity. I can't speak for FIL 7041, but have had good luck with their spin on oil filters.

Genuine Toyota filters are like $6 and available at the big box store. Or order from the dealer discount sites, get extras and keep them on the shelf for convenience.

With that value I really don’t see why people would seek out alternatives, unless it’s for a performance gain.

I agree 110% with you!
Moreover, their's no dyno, even the best butt dyno in the world that can measure a performance difference between one oil filter and another.
I mean, we're talking filtering oil, not blood like our engine is on kidney dialysis. At least I hope 🙏 not.

For some it's not really about power, but better filtration. I remember reading an old article where someone ran a special aftermarket filter and the used oil ended up having less particulate than new oil. But there comes a point where better filtration doesn't realistically help anything.

With good oil, warmed up properly, through a factory filter.. lubrication issues will not be the death of a 3UR.

Ugh, went to use my last TRD in the cabinet last night and one of the end caps was noticeably crooked. This was purchased at a dealer. Could only get an overpriced Fram due to the time and will be stopping by the parts counter today to grab the correct part.

For unsolicited reference: I just saw a YT confirming my suspicions of current Napa gold oil filters. They are no longer produced by Wix/Mann-Hummel domestically but rather by an unknown company in China. Just a heads up for those (like me) who assumed they still were like the Napa gold of old. The cut down I saw wasn't really impressive vs the Wix XP they compared the media/spring to.

From the testing I have seen, Fram Ultra filters are objectively the best widely available filters on the market. Filtering is second to none and their pressure drop is still very good.

Wix XP are terrible, the efficiency was so low it didnt even make it onto the first chart with the scaling.

Wix flow well though since its like filtering with a window screen.

That's a great chart! Interesting the Wix XP fared so poorly. I wonder what it would look like for the volume/weight of contaminants captured? Sheesh, otherwise it looks like a dog!

Since this is from 2021, the Fram endurance wasn't released yet. I am hoping it would actually look better compared to the Fram US. Without the data, I would hope so given price premium. Also, I want to see how the Amsoil SS filters, Donaldson, etc would stack up on this testing. Interesting for sure. I haven't seen anything on BITOG about this.

First time I've seen this too:

Pretty cool for a legit and well regarded Toyota dealer to publish this.

Those charts are from BITOG. One of the members ran a lab and was able to perform the tests.

Cool. I'm talking an updated one with the filters mentioned above.

My issue with Fram in this application is rigid plastic end caps with no seal. It is probably a nonissue due to the amount of them on the road, but the main subjects of this thread have a seal like end in the case of OEM or the TRD (and similar) with full o-rings. Fram doesn’t appear to offer any seal to keep all the oil going through the media.

I will have to check, I haven't actually bought one for my LX570 since my local Walmart has not had them in stock, but I am pretty sure the ones on my GX460 did not have plastic end caps. I thought at one point they had stopped doing it.

TRD may only use the oring because they can’t make the filter ends parallel.

The stock filter fits onto the support tube tight enough that no significant amount is bypassing the filter. Can’t speak for other brands but if they are copying Toyota here it’s not a problem.

I wish they would compare the aftermarket filters to the OEM filters. And them add some of the obscure high quality products like Fleetguard and Donaldson.

FWIW, I now only buy filters from Toyota dealers (usually toyotapartsdeal.com). There were a batch of counterfeit filters that made it into Amazon several years ago and I ended up having some of those on the shelf that then ended up in the garbage.

Amazon has become nothing but counterfeit garbage.
