I've read the FAQ and am still thoroughly confused. I want to use Mobile 1 in my recently acquired '92... Temp here varies from around 20 deg F in the winter to 110 deg F in the summer. My driving style is about 20% highway and 80% stop-and-go in town, as far as hours on the engine goes.

Which would you guys recommend in a 3F-E engine? M1 0w-40, or http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil1_Truck_SUV_5W30.aspxM1 "Truck and SUV" 5w-30?

I thought I heard recently that 5w-40 T&S was discontinued?

10w-30 on the thiner than ideal in summer heat but still would work
0w-40 would work just fine
10w-40 EP might be ideal but good luck finding it
15w-50 EP might be on the thicker than ideal for winter but would be OK

I would not use mobil one 5w-30 nor thier 20 wt oils in TX

if you are doign a lot of stop and go I woudl avoid super long oil change intervals, maybe 5 to 7 K max, if you want to go longer do Used Oil analysis

Raven,

Mobil went and screwed with the entire T&SUV line. The 5w-40 T&SUV is no longer. The T & SUV is now used on an oil called "Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5w-30" that nobody can tell if it is just M1 5w-30 relabled or what?!!! What was the 5w-40 T&SUV (Delvac) is now being called "Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40." We should probably amend the faq.

To answer the original question. Try Mobil 1 0w-40, Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40, Mobil 1 10w-40 EP, or in the alternative, use Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w-40, which is available inexpesively at walmart.

Cool - I got the two oil experts right off the bat!

So you guys think 0w-40 is the best thing going? I was kinda wondering about that 5w-40 "Diesel" oil...

Forgive me if this is a "dumb" question, but what difference would it really make between these two for my particular conditions? To my undereducated brain, the only difference I can see is the "0" vs. "5", which only really matters if you're running in cold weather. Is that correct? I'm just wondering in case I find that one or the other is noticeably cheaper, or one is available and the other is not (smallish town here).

BTW, I was planning to change oil & OEM filter every 5000 miles. Always did every 3000 miles before I started using synthetics.

0w-40 should be fine, one thing I have learned these motors are not that sensetive to viscosity as long as you are in the reasonable range you really cannot go wrong,

to go any deeper than that just gets murky,

good to know atout the new T&S, so does the "turbo diesel" 4w-40 still retain SJ/SL gasoline ratings? we never did figure out if the original T&S was Delvac 1 or not, and now it has changed. same though as before I do not see them making a completley seperate synthetic 5w-40 diesel oil when the had Delvac 1 sittign there to just repackage. delvac one is more expensive though.

Seems like I read something here someplace about "flow". Best I could gather was that somebody said if it was a lighter oil, it would (might) flow better, and therefore cool the engine better. Might M1 10w-30 benefit in this regard?

FWIW, my gut tells me to go with 0w-40 or 5w-40 for this engine... maybe something I read in the FAQ that stuck in my subconcious.

I would run the Mobil1 0w-40 and forget about it. As an alternative non-synthetic, the Chevron Delo 15w-40 will be great and cheap.

a thinner oil will flow more especially in cold weather will but result in lower oil pressure especially at higher temperatures weather that extra flow will actually cool better is debatable, on the 1FZ lower oil pressure means the oil squirters will shut off more often, possibly reducing cooling of the pistons but that is debatable also, a thicker oil will flow less but when it gets to where it is going will provide better wear protection via higher film strength. I do not think the 3FE has squirters so that does not apply in your case.

That "flim strength" is what I'm looking for with the 0w-40 (or a 15w-40 conventional oil).

Thanks for the info, guys! I will feed her M1 0w-40, and hopefully she will be nice to me.

Why does it say 5W-30 on my oil cap and in the manual?:shotts:

because that is what the EPA wanted it to say

this link used to load to a letter from the EPA that stated word for word what the oil cap and owners manual should say.

Let me know what needs to be modified in the FAQ and I will change it.

Under Current Favorites, change #2 to read:

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40: This product was previously available under a different name. We know it says diesel, but don't worry it is a SL approved oil that works very well in gas engines. Availability is unknown at this time as the name change may cause old retailers to no longer carry it.

Also, add a number 5 reading:

Mobil 1 10w-40 EP: This may be the holy grail of the Mobil 1 line. It appears from the specs it actually meets 5w-40 specs and may even qualify as a 0w-40, but Mobil is labeling it as a 10w-40 because that is most popular grade sold in stores. Availability has been very limited, so good luck finding it.

Change the Mobil 1 T&SUV link in post 10 to be as follows with new link I have included:

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40

http://mobil1.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_Turbo_Diesel_Truck_5W-40.aspx

In post 11, fix this paragraph with the new name for the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel:

Delvac 1 reports have been good. Mobil has just released their Mobil 1 5w-40 Synthetic SUV oil. Ignoring the name, is appears, and Mobil reps have unofficially confirmed that it is in fact repackaged Delvac 1. This is a great deal because delvac 1 is only available in 1 gallon containers and runs $6 a quart v. the new 5w-40 sells for $4.00-$5.00 a quart.

I think that is it. Raventai?

looks good to me,

And make sure to use the Mobil 1 extended performance filter to go with it if you plan on goin 5k+! I just switched to the Mobil 1 from Valvoline Maxlife and am leaking alot more from my front and rear main now. Does your rig leak on the front sway bar from the rear main?

Should I use a Mobile 1 filter or OEM? If Mobile 1, what's the filter part number to use?

As far as leaking oil, I don't think so. There's some oil (or grease or tranny fluid) under there in the general area where the front DS u-joint attaches to the front diff, but not enough to drip onto the ground, and fluid levels don't seem to change after 250 miles or so - I suspect it's from a spill when the previous owner changed the filter or something like that.

BTW, haven't been able to find 0w-40 around here yet, but I only checked two places yesterday. I did find 5w-40, which says it's "for diesel and gasoline engines" on the bottle. IF I can find the 0w-40, I'll probably use whichever one is cheaper. The 5w-40 was $5.49/Qt., which I thought wasn't too bad.

There is no need to use the Mobil 1 filter for over 5k intervals. The factory, Napa Gold, or any other quality filter are good for 10,000+ mile oil change intervals.

Go back and buy all of the 5w-40. If there are 20 quarts, buy it all. It is probably the last time you will see it.
