what year mini truck axle do i need to build a hybrid?can it be 86 or newer?

thanks

I believe you want anything pre Tacoma from a mini or 4Runner. The axles that were earlier than 86 are just a little more narrow than the later ones. There is a good write up in one of the Toyota Trails mags on how to do it. You are talking about building a hybrid LC center and mini outers rear axle correct?

sorry for not being clear my bad. i want to build a hybrid fj40/mini truck rear axle(fj40 housing centered)

as seen here

FJ40/minitruck hybrid rear axle- Land Cruiser Tech from IH8MUD.com

in this article it says pre 85 axles are same width as fj40 and 86 and newer mini truck axles are 58" which is the same as fj60 and 62.

my question is does it make any difference, other than it would be a little wider, to use a 86 and newer axle to build a hybrid out of?

axle splines the same and everything?

im having trouble finding pre 85 axles but have found a few 86 and newers

thanks

You want to use the earlier axle housing . The axle tubes in the 85 and earlier axles have a smaller OD. The OD of the earlier matches the ID of the cruiser housing. You can adjust the width as needed, just depends where you cut. You could make your housing longer and use later/longer axles shafts.
