At 90K and I'm just now very occasionally getting a very small thump when I let of the gas after I stop. I know it's a driveline deal and it happens to all 4WD. (My 4WD TRD Taco is really bad) Any how, since the 100's never done it and I don't what to lube I thought I'd ask. How much should it cost me to have Toyota lube this "whatever"?
THANKS!

2nd question: In my manual is says under maintenance to have the DRIVE SHAFT BEARINGS LUBED every so often. Is that the U-joints? Not sure if it's ever been done unless it's automatic with other service. (????)

OK everybody! Don't even *think* about any immature joke about anything having to do with "lubing his whatever" or his "gizmo" OK?
Don't!
:D

added: oh, and Shotts, the drive shaft bearings do indeed have to be done each time the muffler bearings are done, btw.... :D

Slack in the driveline that did not originally exist could be caused by gear/spline wear in the tcase, differentials, suspension lift/driveline issues, or some bad ujoints. But if it was the latter, you would probably have driveline vibration which you didn't say that you had. So, I'm guessing it's just wear you'll have to live with unless you want to spend lots of time and $$$. If you're taking it to a Toyota dealer for all of its scheduled services I bet they service the ujoints. This service should be listed either in the Owner's Manual or FSM.

Oh yeah, check all suspension bolts, especially those on the links to the rear axle. I've had my rear axle shift and clunk due to bolts working their way loose over time. In my case it was easy for me to diagnose; I could push back and forth on the rear tire and replicate the clunking

Yes, they are talkiing about u-joint bearings. In the past, I have not been very pleased with the way most shops lubricate u-joints. They just squirt a little grease in and that's it. To do it right, you really need to push grease through all four cups on each u-joint. This is the only way to get fresh grease to the needle bearings in each cup. Get a grease gun and keep pumping grease into the joint until you see fresh grease come out of all four cups. Then you know it is greased properly. If you have a cup that doesn't take on new grease, sometimes it helps to pull the truck forward so that the driveshaft rotates a little. This might not be as much of an issue on the LC. The driveline angles are a lot better than on my previous vehicles.

There was a post a while back (a long while back) on this issue. Many many many 100 series ownrs chimed in having this issue occur at different mileage intervals i.e. some at 50k some at 30k and some at 90k and on. The dealer, according to my experience and others, often cannot tell what it is. Mine went away after my 90k grease/service but then came back.

I am going try the grease gun deal since I have one and I guess I will have to do it every oil change.

I'm such an idiot I don't even know what to grease. My mechanic will though.

Just look for nipples man. That is why they made them look that way ( :

Lube these gizmos.

I just don't know where the grease goes (in the slide yolks). You'd think it would spill out somewhere after 6 years and 135,000 miles. I usually put 5 pumps in every 5,000 miles. You can see the grease come out of the spider bearings.

I just don't know where the grease goes (from the propellar shafts, not the bearings). You'd think it would spill out somewhere after 6 years and 135,000 miles. I usually put 5 pumps in every 5,000 miles.

Ah, that's a BIG help to a ding dong like me. I never thought I'd have a hard ( ) time finding nipples. :D
