Which carburetors *actually work* for an FJ40??

Slammer : I collect the 2bbl Holleys (2300 series 350CFM) and might be interested in yours with the 2bbl adapter if you want to sell it. PM me

Doug: Obviously I don't stay connected to some of these posted notes since its been a year+ since you wrote. I believe I still have the Holley. I am using the adapter it was sitting on for the MC2100. So no adapter. If you are by chance still wanting it let me know.

I know this of an older thread and there are a thousand different views and variables on carbs. I’d love to go with an in tank pump/sniper combo but$$$$. I just looked at the mc2100 on Amazon, only $100. Can it really be that reliable? With the Holley you need an adapter correct? $+$. I have a Weber 32 which came with my 79. To have it rebuilt I might as well buy a new one. (How I feel anyway )

I won’t be wheeling for a long time after all this body/paint work. Will not be driven when cold., just need a solid carb, maybe the Weber 38 due to the hills here in PA

I’ve found a lot of carburetors just don’t retain modern ethanol gas well. My FJ40 has a small block 350, running a Rochester Quadrajet. After 2 days, the float bowl is bone dry, and you have to crank the starter for about 15 seconds to get fuel back in the bowl so it will fire. I’ve tried anti-drainback valves, expoxied the plugs notorious for leaking on quadrajets, tried two different carbs and done about everything I can think of, but after 2 days, the fuel is gone.

I’ve heard a lot of folks running Webbers have similar issues. My friendly with a Carter 4-barrel on his Cobra kit car has the same issue.

This is to say - the issue you described isn’t necessarily unique to a Webber. I’ve been meaning to try some non-ethanol gas if I can find any and see if there is an improvement.

No experience tuning a Webber, but I’ve found any carb is tough to find a “sweet spot” on - made even tougher if you’re matching a carb to an engine it wasn’t designed for. Almost any carb will work (within reason) but it takes a lot of trial and error to get it right.
the guy I bought my Fj40 from told me use 100% gas it’s better on the carburetor!

Sadly it's difficult or impossible to source in many places these days, particularly here on the West Coast.
My fairly newish fuel pump started leaking internally and I suspect ethanol related damage.
